Anyone have a laser treatment for candida?

WARNING: writing about my ugliest part of my body… my toes!

Has anyone done something to rid their toes of a virus which is caused by candida? It’s that ugly virus that makes toenails all thick, yellow, and cracked. A few years ago, doctors suggested I take some med which had a possibility to affect my liver. I chose not. Recently, especially b/c it’s summer, I’m tempted to tackle this again. I heard doctors can do some laser treatment with a very high success rate. Do you know anyone who has done this? Should I?

To begin with, Candida is a fungus, not a virus.

As for cures, I just read this in the paper a week or two ago, so I have never tried it nor do I vouch for it, but they told of a home/folk cure for toenail fungus that involved making a paste of cornmeal with water and spreading it on the affected nail and leaving it on for an hour or so every day for 1 or 2 weeks or some such time. The theory is that the cornmeal naturally contains a fungus that out-competes and kills off the disease fungus but does not cause a nail problem itself.

If you decide to try this cure, let us know whether it worked.

Ewww, this sounds so yucky! Your solution sounds almost as unattractive as my toenails themselves.

Anyway, I’ve tried different things over the years --although never cornmeal-- and my doctor says they’re absolutely false advertising. I guess I should believe her, because so far, my ugly toenails still have the fungus.

limabeans, have you tried Penlac? Fungus is notoriously hard to get rid of because of its minimalist nature.

I’m curious how the new laser treatment works too. I have done the Sporanox and it did work (although I had to go through two cycles of it). Keep in mind it will take 6 months or more to see the effects. I am fine now but one of my kids has toenail fungus in one pinky toe. The pediatrician has been hesitant to give him the oral treatment, but thought we might look into the laser treatment this summer. Anybody have experience with it? (And your doctor’s right–nothing you can apply externally will cure it once it’s in the nail bed. Don’t even bother.)
