Anyone have experience getting college student insurance to replace cell phone?

My son’s screen broke, and of course I got the message last night at 11, and the insurance company offices are closed U til Monday.
The phone is registered in my name, because it’s my policy, but I am assuming that won’t be a problem for filing the claim?
If the screen broke from dropping, that should be covered?

Thanks for any advice from anyone who’s had this experience.

There are a lot of places that fix screens if that is all that is broken. Big malls typically have a place like that. Maybe $100 to fix.

Thanks. He’s going to take it to the Verizon store. If they can fix it great. If not, then we are trying to use his college insurance.

I just learned about this service that comes to you! Especially helpful for a college student without a car, but obviously a time saver for anyone!

I haven’t used it, but I learned about it from the “tech guy” on our TV news.

One of those places in the mall recently fixed a friend’s screen the same day for $80. We also have Verizon, and you can get insurance through them on just the phone for $5/mo. which we do for our D. No need to deal with a regular insurance company that might be closed on weekends, you just deal with Verizon. Might be worth investigating.

If it’s an iPhone, the Apple Store fixes screens for $135 or so. I got mine fixed in about 2 hours, on a walk in basis. If you purchased the phone with a credit card, some companies provide free insurance, like Discover. S has already made a claim with them for when he cracked his screen and will make another because I cracked mine. Also, if you pay your cell bills with Wells Fargo, they provide free phone insurance, per S.

I usually buy cell phone insurance through Square Trade. My D broke her screen and Squaretrade reimbursed her and she had it replaced at the Apple Store.
Younger D used her college insurance I think 4 times. They eventually cancelled her. She had a cracked computer screen, stolen bike, stolen riding helmet. If you have one of the standard college policies you can go online and see the instructions for filing a claim. With the broke computer screen she took it to a local shop and the insurance reimbursed her. For the bike and helmet she had to get a police report and have the receipt of purchase. In all the instances the insurance company was easy to work with.

Yes, my DD’s phone got drowned in a storm on a mountaintop in New Zealand.

The insurance process was pretty easy, although we had to wait until she got back to the U.S. She had to take it to the Apple Store so they could provide a “repair estimate”, and they reimbursed her for that amount. Since the phone was not repairable, the estimate was essentially the cost of another phone.

However they would only pay for a refurb, not a brand new phone. There was a $25 deductible.

The insurance should pay for the repair, if they decide they can be fixed, otherwise they will pay to replace it. Minus the deductible in either case.

OP here. My son FINALLy got an estimate to fix the phone and sent it to the insurance co. They are putting a check in the mail to get it fixed.
I have no worries about being canceled, bc he is done with school and he is just lucky is insurance was still good.

Calling my insurance company tomorrow, @1214mom.

I’m pretty well taken care of on phone insurance for my college students, though, it really should be dropped and moved to a different company so the bill is less per month. My son’s phone stopped working and I was reimbursed for the entirety of the cost of two years ago, so that was nice.

Calling about dorm /personal property insurance , which I had seen listed in another thread, and did not act on.Thanks for the reminder!
