I posted this in the bigger “Current Bruins taking questions” thread but thought maybe I’d post it separately as well since it seems like a bit of an odd ball question:

I’m wondering if anyone at UCLA (maybe people you know or if you made the same decision yourself) has turned down HYPSM to go to UCLA and why particularly (i.e. what field of study? Was it because of research opportunities etc. in that particular field of study or something more general like the atmosphere?) Are you/they happy with the decision? Thanks very much!

What have those students who turned down HYPSM said about their studies at UCLA and the opportunities there and the social life and do they regret their decision and…

begins to breathe in a human-like fashion again

Whew, yeah.

And congratulations, jackieboy. What are the arguments for both sides for you (and what major/field of study)?

wow jackieboy…you were accepted to Stanford? Congrats…i think i know you from somewhere. well, i hope you make the right decision - follow your heart and not your crouch!

I plan to major in History, a field that UCLA is very strong in. Obviously it’s still not a Stanford education, but the UCLA History department is top notch. I was also invited to apply for the honors college, which is a plus.

More importantly, I’ve grown up as a Bruin. I’ve been a huge fan since the age of five (haven’t missed a basketball game since the 3rd grade, football game since the 5th), and have a really strong emotional attachment to the school.

Location wise, I’m pretty sure I’d rather be in Westwood than Paloalto (not a knock on the city, it’s just pretty bland).

I don’t have that much pressure to choose Stanford since my sister already goes there, thus continuing the “legacy.”

I’m not getting financial aid from either school, so UCLA will be about 20k less per year.

Honestly, the only thing holding me back from UCLA is the fact that I got into Stanford and that it’s…Stanford. I’m pretty sure I’ll know where I want to go after I visit during the school’s respective admit days. Like one of my friends said to me, I can’t really go wrong either way so everything’s cool.

i know 1 person who turned down harvard and i know several who turned down stanford. even though they’re not HYPSM, i also know people who’ve turned down caltech and duke.

I don’t know her personally but my teacher’s step daughter turned down Yale for UCLA.
She didn’t want to go to Cal because it was too close, Yale was too far and she didn’t like the weather. So LA was perfect.
