Anyone know anything about Robert Morris U (in PA)?

Son (junior) looking to study sports management and wants a chance to play ice hockey, hopefully at the club level. I’ve just heard about this school and I am wondering if anyone has any insights? Thanks.

RMU was a safety for D this year. Lots of non-traditional students, not your typical undergrad experience, a lot of commuters. Major academic strengths are business and indusrtial engineering. Not sure about sports management. FA was OK, not bad, but not great.

Thanks…they market themselves in a way that leads me to believe they are going for the “traditional” student. Thanks again.

This was D’s safety too, although we never visited. She applied because of their Hospitality program and Football. In fact, they made March Madness in basketball this year, #15. Very impressive. I did read it was a commuter-type school. They do have a hockey team which has it’s own rink. The FA was better than most OOS or privates she applied to, in fact their offer was in-line with our in-state public. D chose an OOS public U that fits her major.

When I was growing up in Pittsburgh, RMU was Robert Morris College and was a glorified trade school. Although it has apparently added at least one graduate program, it’s still largely a commuter school and accepts about 80% of its applicants.
More than half of the students scored BELOW a 500 on the SAT critical reading section.

momrules, we only live about 20 miles away. In fact D is taking a class through RMU at her HS in engineering. They are trying to make it more traditional, but it will be quite a while until that happens. The hockey rink, BTW, is at the Island sports center which is at least 5 or so miles from campus.

I’m also from Pittsburgh and my brother attended Robert Morris College 20 or so years ago. Like others have said it is a bit of a “commuter college” however, my brother said it never felt empty on the weekends. He also still keeps in touch with quite a few of his college friends. He just recently commented that the campus has changed quite a bit since he was there–lots of improvements. A friends son came to town last year for a tour and was very impressed (he too was interested in hockey) RMU is located in the suburbs of Pittsburgh (appx 20-30 min from Downtown) Large shopping mall/restaurants as well as the airport 5-10 min away.

Thanks to all. We may visit. The draw is that they have FOUR levels of hockey (NCAA, several club options) and a sports management program. Son will likely finish HS next year around a 3.0 with 1100ish SAT’s. Wants out of state (Virginia) and hockey (likely club level or D3). We visited UMass (great Club team) and top Sports Management Program (hard to get into). Not sure son will have the grades. So, if anyone has any suggestions for:
hockey (club or D3)
winters
Sports Management
less competative admissions

I’m all eyes/ears! Thanks again!!!
