Anyone know anything about ...

National Society of Collegiate Scholars? My son was invited - only costs $75! What’s the deal? thanks.

Alright - I found an old thread that was helpful for anyone else …
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/35536-national-society-collegiate-scholars.html

And this link is in that thread, which was helpful …it seems they are accredited.
[Ball State University - How to Judge an Honor Society](http://cms.bsu.edu/Academics/CollegesandDepartments/HonorsCollege/ActivitiesandOpportunities/HonorsOrganizations/HowtoJudgeanHonorSociety.aspx)

My son also received invitation… indicating that the joining fee is $75. (for the privilege of exactly what?) Sounds an awful lot like an organization called “People to People.” They contacted my son in 7th grade, saying he had been nominated, but the head of his school at that time said that neither he nor any of my son’s teachers had ever heard of the group. NSCS lists Maya Angelou as being affiliated with them. Not that’s a draw, but I wonder how much she actually is or has been actively involved with the group in a meaningful way. People to People indicated that our State Representative was involved with them. Before agreeing to send our son overseas with the group, I called our State Representative whose name was listed on the group’s letterhead to gain his impressions. He told me that he did not have a clue as to what the organization was about. SO, NSCS sounds as they may well be a cagily formed organization which talks the talk and tries to walk the walk, all the while making a large profit for perhaps not really doing much. Telling our students they are in the “top 20%” of their class? NSCS has set their bar rather low… but then this allows them to have more paying members. Proceed cautiously…

Frame the letter of invitation if you think it’s worthwhile. That will cost you a LOT less than $75.
