Horace Mann and Fieldston (only two I have info on) ask for deposits by end of day M10. Talk about your tight turnarounds.
Wow! That seems rigid. I guess they figure you should know by then
Congrats! We got into HM too!
Big day for NYC private high school results—good luck to everyone waiting for 4PM!
Ditto! Good luck everyone - another step closer to the finish line
SHSAT results March 6, and then M10 for the grand finale!..
Do you think Riverdale will post before 4?
My guess is 4 on the button. Almost there!
Riverdale decisions published at 4pm…our daughter got accepted!
Congratulations. It’s nice to see some preM10 good news.
Congrats! Are you guys considering boarding too, or just the NYC private schools? And was Riverdale the top choice, or still deciding? Congrats regardless!
Thank you. We did not consider boarding schools, Horace Mann and Riverdale were our top two choices, and she got into both!
Wishing everyone the very best for the M10 decisions!
For those considering boarding, how do you feel about having to make a decision on the day schools without doing the boarding school revisits? Do you feel you have enough info to decline your top choice day school?
It’s not ideal, to say the least. Our kiddo will have had the chance for revisits for the privates she’s considering (Horace Mann, Trinity, Fieldston, Riverdale) at least, and will hopefully be ready to decide which boarding schools would be likely higher on her list so that come M10 she can make some quick decisions.
Congrats to your daughter–very impressive! Ours is revisiting HM & Trinity as well next week.
Any thoughts on choosing between the two? They’re our kid’s top 2 city schools I think. For us it’s weighing commute (we are very close to Trinity) vs campus, HM has better and more varied sports, but may be (or seem?) more sharp-elbowed and hard-core, Trinity maybe less strong in STEM and maybe (?) a more entitled and homogenous student body. And the bigger size of HM (180 vs 120) creating more breadth of opportunity and of kids to draw a friend group from. Admittedly they’re both lovely schools and some of it is hair-splitting but you have to choose somehow!…
Hopefully the vibes on revisit day will be illuminating for her and she’ll have a firm opinion afterwards!
Anyone deciding among Horace Mann and Riverdale?
Our daughter is very clear on her top choice (HM), but it’s two good schools, and our top two choices.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
For us, Riverdale seemed less appealing - clearly a wonderful school but a little less well defined/distinguishing, and the student body seemed more homogenous. And we had a friend who left after 8th to go to an SHSAT school because they were fed up with their privileged and entitled classmates. Yes, maybe could be true at any of these schools, and juts an N of 1, but it is what it is.
What I have heard is that Riverdale is less academically driven than HM and more of a well rounded school with a gentler approach which is why it is now becoming one of the most sought after schools. Many families shy away from HM because they don’t want a pressure cooker for their kids. I think it’s really where the kid feels more comfortable and can sense that the students at the school are similar to themselves and they would fit in easily.
I have a hard time figuring out the cultural differences of the two, though I know they are both extremely strong academically. Besides the campus and size difference, not sure what other distinct differences there are. I think the student body from HM draws from a much broader area such as westchester so I think the population will be more spread out and perhaps more diverse? I would love to hear about cultural differences if any one has information about this or gets a sense after revisits and speaking to people. People seem to think HM is a more competitive high pressure environment than Trinity but I’m curious whether that’s true.
Thank you all for your thoughtful insights and feedback!
From our prior visits, we have a similar impression of Riverdale- a bit less appealing and definitely not as much pressure on academic excellence. Riverdale’s interdisciplinary approach is however what sets the school apart maybe, and if one has to make a choice for a well rounded education, Riverdale could be an ideal choice.
HM definitely demonstrated academic excellence. Our daughter liked the feel of the school, and the student body (one of the main reasons we decided to explore other options compared to her current private school).
Hello everyone. We are very new here. Our little son is 2 years old. We applied to the 3s program at HM. The website says the results will be announced within the first two weeks of February. There is still nothing. Anyone familiar with the 3s admission process? Many thanks
