Anyone knows courseloads in Stanford?

Well, just in case (in a very low chance) I get in, how can I expect to handle my courseloads?

Especially Biological Engineering - do ya need to be really competitive in math???
because I REALLY HATE CALCULUS!!!
AHHHHHH
If anyone knows about the life in Stanford and courseload, can you answer it to share with others?

im not really sure about the school, but I’m pretty sure any engineering requires an extensive math background.

Yes, any engineering will require quite a bit of math, especially calculus.

The good news is that nothing is competitive at Stanford. You’ll need to work hard and eventually be successful in math, but you won’t need to “be competitive” in the sense that you need to outdo the other students.

Not technically true, bonzmeister - many of the math courses ARE graded on a curve, though you wouldn’t know it from the high level of cooperation and mutual support among students

I agree with lki that students are super helpful - they share notes, form study groups, whatever. It’s not cutthroat, but it is competitive in that people are very smart and math classes are frequently curved (this is usually helpful, though, rather than detrimental). There are many other resources, like TA office hours and other dorm tutors.

Can you be more specific in your questions about workload and life?

True, lki. The classes are curved in some way, although the method seems a bit nebulous. I don’t think there’s a set number of A’s, a set number of B’s, etc. What I should have said is that the prevailing attitude is that the way to succeed is not to outdo others, but to maximize your own performance.

The “high level of cooperation and mutual support” is dead on. It’s one of the things I like best about Stanford.

Wow, two people that I know from two completely different things posted in the same thread…

Hmmm…I hear the workload at Stanford is pretty big…but I think Caltech has an even larger one.
