Actually, unlike Carrie Underwood, Lady Gaga trained in college in musical theater, in the same program my D attended (though Gaga did not graduate).

I thought Gaga was in the songwriters program. Clive Davis? But, I could be wrong about that. Either way, I don’t see her as a Maria.

I don’t see Gaga as Maria, but was just commenting that she had MT training, whereas another “name,” Carrie Underwood, did not.

Gaga attended NYU/Tisch/CAP21, a musical theater BFA program, the same one my kid went to.

I know this fact only because my daughter went to the same program as Lady Gaga. But for an easy read of the fact…Wikipedia states the following:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Gaga

Thank you for that wonderful Mary Martin link. The Peter Pan album was a staple of my childhood.

Wouldn’t it have been wonderful to see her as Nellie Forbush…

I am dying inside, reliving my youth. I was one of the nuns singing “how do you solve a problem like Maria”. i find myself up and singing and dancing in front of S/O. I cannot believe I rcall every word to this most wonderful show.

Go for it, Bookworm! :)

I am enjoying the singing so far, acting is a little lackluster IMO.

I think the singing is amazing! I love the nuns :-).

doschicos - totally agree with you! And Audra is great!

Is it just me, but the lighting is terrible- the shadows on the actors are really distracting

bookworm - I get tears in my eyes every time I hear the SOM beginning! Did so, tonight, too.

Audra is great, but a politically correct choice at the cost of historic accuracy is distracting. We’re talking 1930’a Austria. No way would a convent in a European city at that time be run by a black woman.

I think you can only be so critical - this is a “first” of sorts and a pretty tall order in terms of comparison to the original. Carrie definitely excels singing over acting. The kids are good.

The sets are pretty good as well.

The kids are AWESOME!! Especially little Gretl.

I’m really enjoying it! The do-re-me song was superb, I thought. The choreography was fairly complicated, plus all the up and down the stairs. I think she’s doing a fantastic job.

i am distracted by: the eye makeup on a nun??? And the sound and mouths aren’t synched. the sound is coming out before the lips form the words. I was wondering if it really is live or if they are lip synching?? Or is this just the way it happens that we hear the words first before we actually see the lips move?

The movie is way better than the play (this production or any other). It definitely needed editing and shuffling of the songs.

Enjoying the kids as well.

Rolf is a little old looking for the part but the actor has a good voice. And he is handsome. ;)

mdw is watching the movie as we speak…I not so enthusiastic about watching it once again …I did very much like the original…and to those who are Sound of Music enthusiasts I would recommend a trip to the Von Tropp lodge in Stowe Vermont. The original family lived, worked and sang their and currently descendants run the compound. It is very worthwhile and very well done.

Singing is beautiful but Maria sounded terribly out of breath during the do re mi song.

Rolf looks as old as the Captain. Lighting is awful. First thing I said was no way for a blak nun in those parts; really? Do they think this is a first for most of the population?

It just doesn’t top the movie. It isn’t tickling my fancy.

And I can’t keep staring at the girl’s eyebrows.

Wait. Wait. That’s Carrie Underwood.

Yep. Don’t like it. Give me the movie.
