Anyone very familiar with Heathrow?

I’ve been there several times but never for a short layover before flying on to another city. One of my Ds is flying to Spain and must switch planes at Heathrow. She arrives in Terminal 4 and her flight to Madrid leaves from Terminal 1. Any advice on how to make that switch as easily and as quickly as possible? How far apart would they be? Thank you for any suggestions/information/advice. :)

Thanks, dmd. I already had that site. I was hoping that someone might have some personal experience and information to impart. :)

You might try the travel forums over at places like tripadvisor.com, fodors.com etc.

Did you notice on that site that it said that to transfer from Terminal 4 to Terminal 1, you must use the airport train? It is free. It is called Heathrow Express.

I am going to GUESS that it may take 8 minutes by train because if you were to take this train into London, they say to allow an extra 8 minutes if starting at Terminal 4 (as opposed to the main terminals 1, 2, 3) and so I deduct that the time differential between Terminal 4 and the other terminals is 8 minutes. But I only know what I read.

The trains are well marked and easy to use. I have done it several times and they are great. The people who work at Heathrow are very helpful, and would gladly answer any questions she might have–that’s what they are paid to do (and…they speak English!–and probably another language as well!)

We traveled through Heathrow yesterday. There were lots of clearly marked signs specifically for flight connections in other terminals. I think she should be fine but connections to/from terminal 4 take the longest. This site should help.

Thank you all! Yes, I did see the trains info but I’m glad to hear from those of you who have used them that they are well-marked and easy to use!

Heathrow Express goes into London to Paddington. That’s not what you want for changing terminals. Use the train marked for terminal to terminal.
