Anyone watch TV show Everwood?

Please help me out here. I watched this TV show last night for the very first time so of course I don’t know how the ongoing plot got to the point they were at last night… but… a young girl has been accepted to Princeton, and in a discussion with her old boyfriend she learns that the boyfriend had written her essay on the Princeton application. I guess she thought her father had written the essay since she obviously knew that she had not written it herself. But I saw not even the slightest glimmer from either character that there was something wrong with the fact that the accepted student had not written her own essay.

So, regular viewers can you fill in the blanks for me? Was this ficticious falsified application even an issue in a previous episode, or was it presented as an acceptable practice in a situation where a highly qualified but unmotivated high school student forces her parents to take over the college application process?

Personally, I was horrified and have sent an anonymous letter to the Princeton admissions department. I expect to have her acceptance rescinded!!!

Did you really send a letter to Princeton concerning a fictional TV show?

hmm never seen it- I do like Treat Williams though-
so what I want to know is what is Madision doing about her pregnancy?

Supposedly the girl already graduated from Princeton, so there’s not much they can do now. It seems as if she had an affair with the philosophy prof. there, and he did her entire thesis.

Oh yeah, don’t you love it when the movies and TV show people how to build bombs, blow up buildings, have babies at 16 and still have money to lead a flashy life, cheat on the SATs etc.etc.

The forged essay is only part of the silliness of Amy’s Princeton admission. First, there’s the fact that as a junior she was distraught over her boyfriend’s death from a brain tumor, and received D’s and F’s on her report card. Her SATs were 1400; her major EC is ballet, but an earlier episode established that she isn’t particularly distinguished at it. She may have had a distant relative who went to Princeton, but I’m not sure. And here are excerpts from the essay her current boyfriend wrote that supposedly got her in:

Don’t worry, though: At the end of last night’s episode we learned that Amy’s mother has cancer, so I think Amy will stay close to home in Colorado instead of taking up her ill-gotten place at Princeton.

(Believe it or not, the show also has some good moments. I like watching it with my kids.)

I only watch dvds- my schedule doesn’t coincide with the very few tv shows that interesst me- so my tv watching might consist of a few minutes of dr phil interspersed with whatever that show is that has contestants eating madagascar hissing cockroaches and pigs eyes and antique roadshow
I suppose I need Tivo but I really don’t want to get another piece of technology right now unless it is a powerbook G5 with Tiger

Oh, and Emeraldkity4: Madison had the baby and put it up for adoption. Ephraim happened to run into Madison in NYC and when she told him about the baby, he ditched his Juilliard audition in despair. Too bad–he would have been just as much of a shoe-in there as Amy was at Princeton…

Ask me anything: I have a weakness for soap operas. ;)

I’ve watched Everwood from the beginning and have enjoyed it tremendously until very recently. Some of the storylines this season have just gotten a little too absurd for me! The story with the Princeton application, from what I remember, is that Amy did NOT want to go to Princeton and refused to apply. Her dad wanted her to, and he completed the application, and Ephram wrote the essay and mailed the app. There is a lot that is unbelievable about the college process as depicted in this show. I’m assuming that her dad must have forged her signature on the app, and how did he get recommendations and the counselor rec form completed without Amy knowing? I have no idea why neither character would indicate there was nothing wrong with all of this.

Last night, the thing I found most unbelievable was that she didn’t get into Tufts, yet was accepted to Harvard and Princeton. Despite the myth of Tufts’ syndrome, that’s just totally unbelievable. As editrix says, there IS some good in this series, but it seems to have gotten offtrack lately.

chocoholic, perhaps you could enlighten us as to what in the world you’re talking about? ;)

editrix, thanks for filling in the blanks. Funny, I was able to figure out most of it just by watching one show. (alwaysamom - when she matter of factly told her ex-boyfriend that she thought her father had written the essay, I guessed she was a reluctant applicant… although she could have been in a comma) With D’s and F’s as a junior, a mere 1400 SAT and weak ECs, that means the essay was a critical part of her app!!! And it was totally written by someone else!! It really bothers me that they present this without even a nod or a hint that perhaps it is not the right way to complete a college application. I don’t mind if a parent fills out the app for the student, as long as the name, address, birthdate, etc are accurate, and the ECs and awards are listed accurately. But writing an essay for the applicant (as opposed to editing) is the equivalent of taking the SAT test for the applicant. sheeeeesh!!! No, I did not write a letter to Princeton (LOL!!) but I may write to the FCC. This episode did not meet my community standards for decency!!! :)

My D and I started watching it together when it first came out. D stopped watching after the first season. I have to say it got me hooked. And the funny thing about it is I hate TV and it is the only thing I watch. It is my 1 hour of TV a week.

I love Everwood and my elderly parents are now hooked on the DVDs of Season 1. I think it is one of the best shows on TV. The Princeton application thread was obviously not written by someone who frequents CC. Agreed- Amy will ditch Princeton since her mom has a tumor. It was unlikely that Amy would have left Everwood. Ephraim- who knows what he is doing??? I heard “Amy” is dating Benjamin McKenzie of OC fame.

haha i have been watching everwood since the beginning…and yea i think it’s incredibly stupid about how she got into princeton…its’ really not likely at all and i especially hate the lax. attitude…“oh i got into harvard. oh no not princeton too”

ugh! hahah but the show used 2 be good! ephram and amy ended in a good way i must say though…it was a very well done ending.

and momofwildchild IS SHE REALLY DATING RYAN FROM THE OC???
haha…that’s wicked =D

You’re kidding right? I saw the last episode too, but I have not watched the show in a long while, so I really have no clue what is going on either.

Kiddos here watch it, sometimes. And yes, they (my kiddos) were all laughing at the ridiculousness of Amy’s acceptance into Princeton, BUT what freaked them out even more was the episode before where it is revealed Madison put her baby up for adoption. Ephraim shows up at State Child Welfare Offices and it is revealed that Madison did not enter his name on the birth certificate, so that is how she was able to go through with the adoption.

Since my youngest is adopted through a state agency which has very similar adoption laws regarding paternity my kiddos were freaking out that they were portraying an adoption in such a manner. Same way the Princeton application was fradualent and obviously Amy’s signature forged the same fraud and forgery would had to have occurred for a legal adoption to have ensued withput Ephraim’s knowledge. What’s even crazier is that Madison is over 18 and Ephraim was 16…at least it gets my kiddos’ talking about not only the illegality of it all, but also the far-reaching moral implications.

Adding to the craziness of the application fiascos was Amy calling Julliard adcom and calling him names. Then she calls a faculty member at another university who calls on Ephraim’s behalf and wrangles him another audition which he bales on again.

It is now bordering on the really, really stupid.

Kat

Historically, my D3 and I have enjoyed Everwood, I caught it last night, for the first time in ages…I could not get over the Princeton acceptance…why is she getting accepted in May? Was she waitlisted?

I have seen too many great kids here get massacred to even think that any one with Amy’s profile could/would get in…then the forged signature and fake essay. Sheesh, what kind of ethics are they modeling?

Too funny that this thread showed up here :D

Weren’t Amy and Emphram dating? I haven’t seen the show in a long while until last night. I do remember something about Ephram wanting to go to Juliard though.

If I hadn’t got hooked the first season, I probably wouldn’t be watching this yr. I really felt for the brother when he received the thin envelope last year. If Amy’s mom doesn’t die, will Ephraim’s dad save her next season?

If you want to catch up on Everwood from the beginning, go to the “Television Without Pity” site. Go to “display all episodes” and you can read the recaps.

Him writing her essay was supposedly symbolic of him not thinking they would end up together, I too watched last night but only catch a few episodes here and there with my D. I am surmising that she didn’t apply since she wanted to be near Emphram. I can’t Believe she had C’s and D’d or even many B’s however as he said she got in with her grades and scores not his essay. Guess the writers don’t have teenagers, or read CC. I don’t need to watch too many soapoperas as I have 2 teenagers and listen to them and their friends. I actually have liked the few shows of Everwood I saw.

Ah, the magical world of TV-land: Amy Abbott received the following grades on a report card junior year and still got into Princeton (http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/GuidePageServlet/showid-9008/epid-297239/):

I guess all you have to do is to “want the possibilities a school like Princeton can afford” ;). (Personally, I didn’t even think the essay that Ephraim forged for her was all that hot…)

I wonder if this will prompt a jump in next year’s applications to Princeton. Anedotal evidence suggests that two other WB shows, “Felicity” and “The Gilmore Girls,” had that effect on NYU and Yale.
