No, that’s not Al-Qaeda speaking.

The U.S. congratulated the Iraqi Parliament yesterday on the reinstatement of its speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, leader of the major Sunni bloc. Al-Mashhadani is best known for having proclaimed on the floor of Parliament that “Anyone Who Kills Americans is a Hero”.

No matter. The U.S. is desperate for an oil-sharing agreement, and if killing more of our Dick Morris “suicide death squads” is the cost, so be it. But (and the media and, especially, NPR, has been extremely remiss in reporting), the issue isn’t that the Iraqis can’t come to an oil-sharing agreement among themselves. Rather that the draft agreement gives permanent control (and revenue) of the oil fields to U.S. oil companies, something that NONE of the parties in Iraq support. Without such a requirement, the Sunnis, Shiites, and Kurds might get on quite well - that’s something we are likely never to be allowed to find out.
