I heard from someone today that demonstrated interest plays a huge part in admissions at Wash U. Can anyone confirm this? In the past, I’ve emailed and called requesting a Wash U DVD. I also attended the meeting when a rep came to my school.

For those of you who have gotten in at some point - do you remember what you did? I don’t really just want to do something for the sake of doing it but I could always use more information on the school.

Do you have any other suggestions to effectively demonstrate interest?

My son was admitted last year (but went elsewhere). He did visit a couple of times, and that probably was necessary for him, since we live just a couple of hours away, and if you don’t visit under those circumstances, they figure you really are not serious.

There is a new engineering dean. Evidently she made some quite precipitous changes to the undergraduate program, including eliminating majors even for students who were still enrolled. I understand she has some faculty perturbed at her, but I don’t know all the reasons.

I visited the summer before applying and also applied to two of the merit scholarship programs (didn’t get either). I was accepted, but ended up going elsewhere.

re post # 8: I’m not in a position to say whether or not the reputed “turmoil” is affecting students, except to say don’t plan to major in aeronautical engineering–it is now an area of concentration in mechanical rather than a major. Rumor has it there have been other changes, but I don’t know any details at all. Try to make contact with current students.
