AP BIO: Seasonal turnovers?

Can anyone tell me about seasonal turnovers?

No, I wouldn’t know…I got a 2…

I got a 5 and I don’t know either!

yeah…don’t worry about that…I got a 5 and I have no clue. If it is ever asked, I doubt you will get more than 1 question on it.

Does that have to do with lakes? That’s the only thing I can remember about them.

Ice is less dense than water, meaning it floats. However, it will also melt (because an entire lake just doesn’t freeze), allowing more water to freeze. This way, the water from the bottom of the lake eventually get to the top and the water from the top of the lake get to the bottom. It allows for distribution of nutrients.

P.S. I got a 5. And I’m a complete Bio nerd. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. ;)

so i am not the only One…HAHA…now i dont feel so lonely…

lol lets make a club or something…lol

btw u can ask me anything too…lol

What are the best mneumonics to memorize?

Xylem, apparently you’re more of a bio nerd than me, given the user name xylem. Maybe I should change mine to Phloem. =D

And I really have no idea about mneumonics. I’ve never done them, and most of the time, I spend more time memorizing the mneumonic than what they actually stand for.

well there’s the King Philip Came Over From Great Spain…

a good one (for mitosis) is I Put My Arms Together (Casually if u include cytokinesis)

No, it’s “King Philip Came Over For Great spaghetti.”

kings play chess on fine glass sets

DUH! haha

Seasonal turnovers are like how the differences in climate in the seasons cause the waves to move nutrients from the bottom to the top. I don’t know the exact details, but that’s basically it I think.

^ Yes! By the ice thing that I described! It happens all through winter! This way, you don’t have lakes with only nutrients at the bottom and have all life at the middle and top of the lake (the non abyssal zones!) completely die from lack of nutrients.

its king philp came over for german spaghetti… which is for classification
(Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus SPecies)

i guess u neeed a new Screen name… :)

and mneumoics id say the best one to memorize is the one that i put above for classification…because its rather hard to memorize the ORDER of them…but i dont really see anything else that needs mneumoics…u could just memorize the words themseleves rather then memorizing the mneumoics …(like me.duh said)…

haha me.duh we posted at near the same time ( i was typing when u made ur post…)…very funny indeed

well the four main stages of cell division can be remembered by taking PSAT and replacing the S with an M

…is it really worth it to memorize a bunch of mneumonics for things as short as cell division? Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telephase/Cytokinesis. Sounds pretty simple to me.

totaly agreed… i mean its pretty simple and the mneumoic is gonna be LONgEr then the real thing…but maybe u can remeber it by like P-MAT
it makes sense when u pronucne it…u cant forget it…but still its really easy to just memorze the thing itself…

well yeah as a n00b to bio last year I need something to remember it for SAT IIs so I made up PMAT…it’s second nature now but I still remember using PMAT back then lol.

yea PMAT is the best way to go …if u really need something …lol ( i ve used that too to remember the order…lol… but now i doubt iwould even need it…)…Second nature like u said…
