I have taken the most rigorous courses my high school offers, including nearly all APs offered… like 5 (This is saddening, I know…in fact, I led the charge in getting an AP Art Class)… with one exception. I “opted” out of AP Latin (Vergil I think?). Actually, the class would never have made, since we have to have three people present and I was the ONLY student remotely interested. I could have done the IS option, but was intending to free up some time outside school to do more volunteer work/help on the yearbook (pretty intensive at my school)/and maybe intern somewhere. Assuming I don’t want to look defeated or lazy or whatever, what should I do?

I had a similar experience. I took three years of French, then opted out of taking AP French in my senior year because the only section offered was at the same time as the yearbook class, and I had been named editor in chief. I was afraid I’d look lazy, so in the “additional information” section of the common app, I wrote a brief explanation about my decision. It worked, apparently, since I was accepted to HYPS and the top UCs.

Thanks. That’s very reassuring!
