My school is offering AP Calc BC for the first year and is already offering math 150. Assuming they’re the same difficulty (that’s pretty much what the calc BC teacher said), which class should I take? The only thing that has me leaning towards calc BC is that it comes with an extra point and with math 150, it’s offered off campus and doesn’t factor into my GPA. However, someone told me math 150 was better but didn’t have an reason why. Which would took better on my transcript? Either way, I’m taking math 250 next year. Thanks for your help!
Calculus BC should actually cover two years of college calculus, if memory serves me right.
This particular fact could be wrong, so take it with a grain of salt! :o
The more concrete stuff I’m aware of:
-Dual-enrollment grades should count towards your GPA, unless taken over the summer. Regardless, their grades will go on your permanent educational record.
-College classes are structured differently from highschool classes. Less time is spent in lectures, and more time is spent studying and/or doing homework. You know whether this will help or hurt you.
-Calculus BC moves at a fast pace. Consider whether you’re prepared for a more intensive Calculus experience.
-Transportation can be a big issue. If you can’t drive, the definitively more attractive option is a class offered at your high school.
-Barring agreements between schools or special exceptions, college classes cost money. Consider whether you can afford the college class, or if you’d even want to fork over the money if you could, versus taking a considerably cheaper AP class.
I think AP Calculus AB is a more comparable option. If this class is available, and you haven’t taken it already, it may be a good idea to just go that route. If you’re very confident in your mathematical abilities, then it’s a tossup.
What does Math 150 cover? You need to look at the catalog for Math 150 first. Does it cover integrals, approximation and series like Calc BC?
@OMPursuit @coolweather the discussion in class was that there was only one section of information that math 150 doesn’t cover and calc bc does, unfortunately, I forgot what it was. Also, @OMPursuit, I’m almost positive that math 150 doesn’t factor into my GPA (at least at my school) but yes my grades sure do show up on my transcript! Also I’m not so much concerned over transportation and money, and am confident in my math skills enough to take something more advanced than Calc AB. I’m more looking for whether I should take calc bc or math 150. Thanks for your help!
You should talk to your math teacher and counselor about this. We have no idea what “math 150” is.
