AP Calculus BC

I am a international student moving to the US to join the US High School System in Grade 10. Now I was assigned to Honors Pre-Calculus for my maths course but during the past few months I have managed to complete all the topics required. I am quite able in mathematics and most importantly I enjoy it alot (I studied the Pre-Calculus Topics by myself in my free time). I was wondering if I should do AP Calculus BC or is it likely to be to difficult a course for a 15 year old. I really have no idea of the difficulty of the course at all but I am pretty sure I could cope with it. Also is it something rare that a student does AP Calculus BC in Grade 10 because I asked some of my friends in the US who thought it would be impossible.

Thanks for your time.

Age shouldn’t have any bearing on what courses you are to take in high school. If you were in an Honors Precal course, and you understand the topics covered, then you’d do just fine in BC.

I guess it would be rare to take that course as a 15 year old (I didn’t take AP Cal until I was 17), but who cares? If you enjoy it, go for it.

Good luck,
-Jared

It’s rare, but my son and a friend at his school completed AP Calc BC in 9th grade, and they’re not unique. If you’re ready for the material and want to study it and the course is available to you, take it. Don’t worry about how old you are at the time.

My daughter completed AP Calculus BC in 9th grade as well. As mootmom mentioned, if you are ready for the material, go ahead. We never let age determine whether she should take a particular mathematics course. Good luck to you!

I’d have to agree that age really doesn’t matter, as long as you don’t mind being in a class with older students. I also took BC Calculus when I was 15, and I did fine w/ the coursework, but everybody in the class was older than me - I didn’t mind that, but it does take some getting used to. Since you posted your question on the MIT forum, does that mean you want to go here? If so, good luck - I’m sure they’ll be very impressed w/ the initiative you took to teach yourself pre-calc.

Based on the fact that you understand precal and are good at math, I think you’d be bored to tears sitting through the class again. Besides, precal (honors or otherwise) tends to include a lot of reviewing Alg 2 or previewing calculus. Very little material can really be classified as precal unless you don’t know trig very well. Definitely take Calc BC. Even if it’s a bit of an adjustment, it’ll be worth it to avoid the boredom of being taught what you already understand.

Thanks everybody for the replies I will take AP Calc BC then and yeah because I didnt realise I posted in it the MIT forum but yeah I would like to attend. Thanks everyone for their time.

As the other answers you have received show, it is not unknown. My son too will finish up his calculus BC course (actually a university course, not officially designated an AP course) in ninth grade, and I don’t taking the AP exam next year to be any problem for him. Just prepare well, and you should do fine too.

I’m a math teacher and i regularly teach AP Calculus BC to 8th and 9th graders and they do very well on the AP exam. If you have all the precalc knowledge and enjoy math, you should definitely go for it.
