AP Chemistry in High School for Striving Pre-Med Major?

I’m planning on taking 4 AP classes in my Senior Year in High School.

AP English Lit
AP Calculus AB
AP Physics
AP American Govt.

Art Elective (I have to fulfill my VPA requirement)

Another Elective (I’m continuing this elective for a 4th year to look good for colleges)

AP CHEMISTRY???

I’m planning on being a Pre-Med/Biology Major in college (with hopes of going to UCLA as my top school). At UCLA, the pre-med program (or prerequisites for entering Medical School) emphasize classes in Biology and Organic and Inorganic Chemistry. I’m trying to squeeze AP Chemistry into my schedule for next year, but have no idea how I can. AP Chemistry and AP Calculus are both insanely hard courses at my school. The others are jokes. Do you recommend (because I’m aiming towards being a pre-med major) that I replace AP Physics (which is a joke) with AP Chemistry (so I can get a strong foundation in this subject for when I enter college), or that I should take AP Chemistry AND AP Physics, as well as all my other AP classes and electives?

OH MY GOD YES…TAKE AP CHEM AT ALL COSTS…if u do general chem will be a breeze…if u DONT you will probably end up with a bad grade in chem for your first 2 quarters…furthermore THE GENERAL CHEM TEACHER AT UCLA (HIS NAME IS LAVELLE HE IS A ■■■) ASSUMES U HAVE A STRONG BACKGROUND IN CHEM AND HE TESTS ACCORDINGLY…
you have to take 2 years of chem for premed…having a good
foundation is very helpful

i recommend u take ap chem, ap calc (also VERY helpful)…drop ap Lit if u already have taken ap english comp (u dont get ANY CREDIT OR EVEN UNITS FOR AP LIT IF UVE ALREADY TAKEN AND PASSED AP ENGLISH COMP)…so take ap chem, ap calc, and ap gov

how many aps have u taken and what is ur gpa

Thanks so much for the advice, @jtanton.

I’ve taken 3 AP’s this year (my junior year):

AP English Language/Comp
AP Biology
AP Comparative Govt.

2 Honors classes (that count as honors/AP credit for the UC’s) (Honors Pre-calculus & Honors Spanish 7/8)

an elective (that I’m continuing for 4 years)

My official GPA for this semester hasn’t been released yet, but I got one B in AP Bio, so my cumulative unweighted is probably at around 3.8-ish about now. My weighted should be around 4.2.-4.4. (My high school weighted GPA differs w/ the UC GPA).

So do you think I should take AP Chem in the place of AP Physics - or is AP Physics also really helpful for pre-med majors, so it’d be a better idea to take AP Chem AND AP Physics next year?

It is possible to take AP Chem and AP Physics? If you can, I suggest you do. A strong background in the core sciences will put you at an advantage over all of those who haven’t taken APs in the sciences. The UCs are not really concerned with your senior year GPA anyway, as long as you don’t get a bunch of Cs or drop below a 3.0. Taking these courses now can save your GPA in college, if you take the introductory courses again.

Don’t take AP Calc. Those classes will be (relatively) easy A’s here.

^ depends on who u get…some asian profs cant say a word…and most ppl i know in my 3 series classes who got As took ap calc (i was one of them and no way in hell could i have learned and done well with my idiot profs)

Taking AP Calculus and AP Chemistry would be tremendous help coming in to UCLA as a pre-med. Depending on who you get, calculus would be a breeze and AP chemistry would definitely put you at an advantage over many of the other pre-meds who have never taken AP chemistry (like me). I wished my high school had offered that course so I wouldn’t be have to work as hard as I am now. But that’s not to say that without chemistry background, you won’t do well. I never took the course and I still managed to do as well. It just depends on your work ethics.

I haven’t taken physics yet, but I heard it’s really hard here (depending on who you get). So if possible, you might want to take physics because it’s one of the required series you have to take.
