Hi all;

I was wondering (being international) what the ‘norm’ was regarding AP courses at top level boarding schools. I am entering the class of 2010 at Exeter next year, and the schedule that I have ‘‘planned out’’ only manages to include AP courses in the senior year (English, Chemistry, Economics and Calculus AB). Is this going to be a problem when applying to colleges?

I am finding it hard to ‘gauge my ability’ against the U.S system, as our curriculum is completely different. Could I have chosen too easy courses?

Any help appreciated.

the norm depends on your high school. (ex. my high school takes more AP courses than Exeter)

Hey HJcoats.
At Exeter (my school - I’m going a senior in the fall), many, if not all, typical upper-level courses (both required and elective) are designated with an “asterix” in course listings, signifying that the course is at an AP/college-LEVEL, regardless of whether or not one prepares for any AP examinations (in fact, most Exeter courses specifically do not “teach to the test”; Harkness is ill-suited to standardized examinations.) This list of advanced courses is, in fact, sent to colleges.

I highly, highly, highly doubt colleges will care whether or not you take many APs at Exeter.

PS: You can take English exams (both) in your junior year. I just took them; the English 310/320/330 sequence is adequate preparation.

Thanks for that… I am just not familiar with the U.S system. Here in Australia every high school student takes courses (6 out of 100+) which follow the same curriculum, and then are marked out of 50 on their exam results and course work relative to others in the state (These marks are the ONLY thing which get you into university! - No interviews or essays…)

Australia? Very cool. I was an international student too, when I came - I’m American, but I was living in Rome at the time. We’ve since moved to NYC, though.
