Hello.

I am a rising junior at Hotchkiss. Since I am pretty obsessed - I think it is pretty low - with my 9th grade and 10t grade GPA (I am an intl student) - it is 9.61/10 9th grade and 9.69/10 10th grade (9th year: lots of A’s, A-'s in Biology and Geography, B+'s in Maths and Computer Science and B- in Physics; 10th year: lots of A’s, B+'s in Physics and Maths and B- in Computer Science) you can imagine that I really plan to work my butt off next year so as to get the highest GPA possible.

Now, my question regards a choice that I have to make about the language requirement.

I am really good in French (fluent, good in writing) and when I took the placement test (vocab, grammar writing and a bit of literature) I was told that I did almost perfect on it and I would qualifiy for Sixth-Year French, this course being the highest course in French. The order goes like: AP French Language, Advanced French Literature and then Sixth Year French.

The thing is that I was told that there are so few students that manage to qualify to SYF throughout high school that it is almost given on an independent study basis - so I will have the really nice option of focusing on some certain periods in French lit that I am really interested in (and that I will match my other EC interests), while also mastering French language and managing to get a 5 on AP French pretty easily (actually I was expecting it, as I worked really hard for my DALF exam with Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing Section -all in French- and I was the first student in my country to pass it at this early age).

Up to this point, I am pretty sure that I will take this class yada yada and then I remember about GPA ![]()
My concerns are: - this course’s name being Sixth Year French - nothing really concludent of your French level, although this is considered higher than AP French

and the fact that for the unweighted GPA, since the AP course has that extra point, it will be better to take the AP French: getting grades more easily (I know a lot of grammar, tons of words, I have Belgian friends to whom I spoke a lot in French etc etc.)

So, considering these 2 facts (I would love to take Sixth French Lit, while AP French will most certainly give me a higher GPA), what would you advise me to do ?

Thanks a lot … and sorry for writing so much, just wanted to give you people a pretty complete picture of the situation.
