AP Credit in CC

So first year in university will cost me over 10k in loans so an associates degree along with community college is looking preferable its too late to drop out but I am interested in transferring after first year. I do have AP credits and wonder if those would likely transfer to community college along with units earned in the university.

What do you mean it is too late to drop out? Have classes started already?

Many students cancel their enrollments and withdraw before classes start. If the money isn’t there, withdraw now and either start this fall at the CC or take a gap year while you work out the money issues and apply to a new list.

Just like 4-year institutions, each CC sets its own policy about AP credits. Check the website(s) of the CC(s) you are interested in and find out what your AP scores could be used for there.

Usually, transfer students will find that the new school does its own evaluation of AP credit and equivalencies, rather than relying on how the old school evaluated them.

So if you are transferring to a CC, check its policies on how it will treat your AP credit. Of course, when you later transfer to a four year school after attending CC, the four year school’s policies on AP credit will apply in terms of fulfilling its degree requirements.

Classes start in about a week and a half but I applied for dorms and am tied down to a lease so therefore I couldn’t really withdrawal from the university altogether.

Ask about that lease. There may well be a way to get out of it.

It sounds like this university is too expensive for you. Don’t mess up your long-term financial situation if you can avoid it.

You didn’t specify which CC you’re talking about, but typically they welcome AP credits.

I am out of luck with the dorm lease because it specifically states that I cannot terminate the lease for reasons such as school transfer or even school withdrawal among so many other things. I should have been more careful, I never really considered community college but it just seems like the most viable option at this point. I plan to work but as of now I don’t really seem myself taking out overwhelming loans. So I really am considering community college.

Commuting to my nearby cc will cost me under 2k a year without even considering any financial aid if I qualify. Seeking an opinion if I shoot for an associates degree, what would you guys do finish sophomore year in a university and absorb a similar amount in loans for the year or potentially switch to cc and although it could take longer if my units don’t transfer but save money and try to get a job in which I could also work more hours?

How did you end up with 10k of debt for your freshman year? Do you have both Stafford and Perkins loans? Are you classified as independent? Are you certain you would be able to keep borrowing that much money every year?

How long are you stuck in that lease? The full school year? 12 months? Read it carefully. What happens if you find a sub-lettor who can take over your part of the lease? Could you leave after one semester or one quarter? Are you renting from the university itself?

Transferring out to a cheaper place might make sense. Think of all of the options - not just the community college.

My two loans are the stafford and Parent Plus loan, you know at first I was optimistic that I could take that initial debt but maybe lower my loans to like 7k a year but as it stands I feel it could be more risky to potentially graduate from a four year with about 35k in debt rather than get an associates from a cc and have very minimal debt. By the way the paperwork on my lease for the campus is for the entire school year, if it weren’t for this I would drop because am insecure about it now. I just hope that in transferring to a cc I get to keep a good amount of units so the year isn’t an entire waste.

I am the first in my family to even go to any place of higher education so I was kinda pushed to the idea that I deserved to be in a four year but right now it really isn’t making the most sense financially.
