My summer Assignment is to read Neal Postman’s Amusing Ourselves to Death and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and annotate it. Then we have to write a 2-3 page essay on 3 questions.

Has anyone read these books? Which one is better… which should I read first?

Well since Postman refers to Brave New World in his book perhaps you should read Brave New World first. I read BNW many years ago as a freshman in high school. It was probably the first sci fi book I read (unless I read Stranger in a Strange Land first), the start of a long addiction to sci fi. My recollection was that it was an interesting dystopia, but overly didactic. It would be interesting to look at it now and see how right he got it.

Neither book is very long. You could have read one of them since your first post.

I think mathmom has it right. You should probably start with the Huxley. People have liked it a lot for a long time, and it is an easy read. That’s not so true of the Postman book.

Also, it may be a good idea for you to have your own reaction to Huxley before Postman tells you what he thinks about it. If you read Postman first, you may never get the sense that the Huxley could mean something entirely different to you.
