Ap Exams! Helppp!

My teacher gave us two choices:

 1. To take the AP Statistics exam, under the condition that you go to Statistics Camp or
 2. To not take the AP exam

I don’t think I can go to the camp, considering it is THIS week and costs $110. However, I was planning to take the AP exam, but now that I cannot, I’m thinking of getting a refund.

Will not taking an AP exam affect college admissions(like say ho hum UCLA)? Do the colleges even look at the AP exams taken in your senior year? After all, all of my scores are sent, so would colleges even notice?

You can take whatever AP exam you want. Your teacher can’t force you to do anything like a camp as a contingent for taking an AP test.

Yep, Johnny’s right.

As far as AP exams during senior year… do they look at them? …Well yes they do. But it is done when you’re already accepted and for course placement/credit purposes. Depending on how your school does transcripts, your colleges may be aware that you will not be taking an exam (depending on how courses are designated and whatnot).

So wait, are you currently a senior (b/c it doesn’t seem like it) or are you a junior already considering colleges and looking ahead?

Anyway, the bottom line is, your teacher does NOT have the ultimate say in whether or not you may take the AP Exam. Such exams are offered to EVERYONE. I would contact the College Board w/ your situation (www.collegeboard.com) and ask them for advice. I’m not sure how helpful it’ll be if you ask for help from your guidance counselor(s) or school principal, and dean(s), but go ahead and try it out. If you want to take the exam, you should be able to, and you should NOT have to pay for a camp! What about for students that can’t afford the camp? That’s ridiculous… I’m sorry, I do feel bad for you. But I wouldn’t just accept it passively. Be active, speak up for yourself, and demand the right to take the exam! Good luck, and PM me to let me know how it all works out!

-Jon ;)

I know it sounds ludicrous, but since my teacher brought this up, I’ve been forced to rethink it and I feel like taking the AP exam would be pointless. Sure, it would earn me 4.0 credits for the units requirement for UC, but… geez, I really don’t want to through the hassle of dealing with an obstinate teacher in my senior year and face an administration that will also harp on me for not going to the camp.

I’m a senior btw

Wait, if you ARE a senior, then think about it: there’s not much time left for you to “deal with her.” If the real hassle is preparing for the AP exam, then that’s a different story. But if s/he’s your only obstacle, then forgoing the chance at getting college credit would be a pretty foolish option. But, do whatever you think is BEST for YOU! Good luck!

I dont think they can legally keep you from taking the exam… What are they gonna do, refuse letting you into the test room? Thats ridiculous… you’ve already paid, and unless this was a condition of enrolling in the class, they have no good reason to deny you entrance.

Your teacher may have good intentions, but s/he just isn’t being fair. But if a nearby high school offers it, maybe you can make some arrangements (if that’s possible at this point?). Call or e-mail the College Board. They’ll probably be your BEST help at this point!

Well, the only way you can be excused from camp is if you have a real, good reason. As for me, my only reason would be the cost, and I don’t think that cuts it.

So I’m just wondering what the consequences would be if I didn’t take the AP exam. I knew a girl last year who didn’t take any of her 4 AP’s, and Berkeley took her anyway. Would colleges hold anything against me if I didn’t take the exam?

That is so crazy. At our school you can sign up for whatever test you want. Even if you don’t have a chance of passing.

They can’t stop you from signing up. They’ll tell you requirements, but it’s ludicrous to demand that you attend a camp. You’ve been taught about this stuff for a whole school year!

Yeah, my school wants to increase its passing rates, so they’re trying to figure out ways to boost scores(even if it means forcing students to torture camps). AP teachers are also giving entrance tests that screen the students, and get to pick and choose who they want based on their scores.
