AP Exams

How exactly do AP Exams work with placement? I have the option of taking AP Lit, AP Language, and AP Psychology. My only other school choice is Stanford, which doesn’t accept any of these. For Duke, these would be used for placement. However, I don’t want to dish out $240 for tests I probably won’t need for a school I may or may not attend.

My question is, let’s say I took an AP English test - would I really be required to take any sort of English 101 class anyway, or to fill my English requirement, could I take virtually any class? Also, my interest in psychology is nonexistent, but if I wanted to take a class indirectly somehow considered part of the psychology department, would I be forced to take intro? I really don’t think I would. Thus, making the usefulness of APs in the non-math/science/language areas sort of pointless.

http://www.aas.duke.edu/trinity/t-reqs/credit.html#AP</a></p>

Well, about English, if you take the AP English test, yes you would be able to take any English class you wanted, as you can see from the site that Amused posted. But you WILL have to take Writing 20 no matter what APs you have.
As for psychology, for example, you would only have to take intro for classes that required it as a prerequisite or if you’re planning to major. Some have prerequisites, but many do not.
I would say if you plan on taking any English classes, like if you are premed you will have to take at least one in addition to Writing 20, take AP English, because then you won’t have to take the intro English course and you can chose whatever you want.
However, you don’t have to take English classes to graduate. You just have to take 3 classes with the W code (including Writing 20).

See, that’s what I’m asking: IS there a reuired intro English class? I couldn’t find anything that said that.

I’m still leaning towards not taking the tests - I don’t plan on taking a lot of English or psychology classes and in all likelihood, I may not end up at Duke at all.

Writing 20 serves as the required intro English class. If you’re an English major, it might be different.

Exactly my point - APs can’t opt you out of that.

Yup. So you are right. Outside of econ, chem, physics C, calc, bio, compsci, and languages (most of which require 5s, not 4s), taking APs is a waste of time for Duke and most other top-10 schools.

Sigh. Of course my school offers NONE of those classes besides calc. I’m just not taking the tests - Stanford doesn’t even give credit at all.
