My teacher this year said that guessing will not negatively affect your score, however in the AP brochure thingy and in the AP Student Pack it says that guessing does negatively affect your score.

Help please?

If you answer a question right, you get one point. If you answer it wrong, you lose 1/3 of a point. There are four answers to pick from, so if you randomly guess on everything, your score should average out to 0. It theoretically won’t hurt your score on average if you have absolutely no idea and guess on a question.

Even though you gain a whole point if you guess right as opposed to only losing 1/3 if you guess wrong, in my opinion it’s not worth the risk to randomly guess just because it’s more likely to lose something than to gain something. If you can rule out even one answer, though, the odds are in your favor.

In case you want to be a geek about it, if you can rule out one answer and guess randomly, you gain .11 points on average, and if you can rule out two of the answers and guess from the other two, you gain .33 points on average. I personally would guess if I can rule out even one, but it’s up to you of course.
