How big of a factor do you think AP grades will play in determining the admission to a major/pre-major program at a university. For example, I’m hoping to transfer to UW-Madison, which has a very highly regarded undergrad poli sci program. I got a 5 on the AP Gov exam in 2006, a year in which only 8% of test-takers received that grade. Will this play into their decision at all?

Also, do adcoms look at the relative scores of AP exams. In other words, do they look @ grade distribution? If a person got a 5 on a relatively hard exam where few people got 4’s and 5’s, does that play a factor? I know thats a loaded post…but any input would be welcome.

AP grades really do not have much of an impact. For regular freshman admissions they really only want your grades after you have decided to attend, so for transfer I doubt they would be a real boost. I agree, if you have any 5s, that is a good thing overall, but for transfer admissions they look at you college performance first, then your high school GPA and standing.

I submitted with my application them to show I was capable of performing when challenged (one 5, two 4’s). Will they look at that as presumptious or is it acceptable?

I doubt they will look at it as presumptious but I don’t think it is going to help you at all either. Since you are a transfer, they are most concerned with the work that you have done this year at your current college. And UW will not care about your intended major in deciding whether or not to accept you. AP scores are not supposed to play a role in admissions. Large state schools don’t really look at them much because they have too many students applying that have not had access to AP or have not taken AP exams before spring of senior year.
