AP Human Geography 2010 Prep

Really??? That is the easiest curve! So was 70+ a 5?

Welp, the FRQs have been posted on the site, so I guess that means we can discuss them. Any idea when they’re gonna post the scoring guidelines though?

^I would agree. Wanna post answers we put and compare???

Yeah, let’s discuss. The FRQ wasn’t bad though. The only part I had trouble with was “relocation of a capital city.” I mentioned Brasilia which I’m pretty sure is a “forward capital” but I had to BS my explanation of why that was a centripetal force.

sd6, I talked about Brasilia, too! And for how it is a centripetal force, I just discussed how they relocated to try to separate themselves from Portugal to make the capital more a reflection of Brazil, not Portugal. And that’s how it made them a stronger state… Idk, though. I really hope I earned enough points to pass.
I thought the mc went really well. I feel like I knew a lot of them (and I had the class last term, and I basically only used Barron’s. I did like mc of my friend’s Kaplan’s).

*but I also did some of the mc of Kaplan’s.

I also BSed about Brasilia!

Haha, the only reason I knew about Brasilia was the 2008 HG audit exam I did on the way to the exam. One of the MC was “Which of the following is a forward capital?” Thank god I looked up the definition of that and then saw that the answer was Brasilia.

Man, i’m so glad I remembered that Brazil relocated their capital for FRQ 2. FRQ 2 was my least favorite, since it was worded oddly. FRQ 1 was nice because they GAVE you the model to use, and FRQ 3 was also nice since Population pyramids had been drilled into my head.

LoL i bsed about Brasilia as well, I wrote about how putting the capital at the center gave the people a cultural center lol.

What did you guys put for infastructure and its affect on national identity?

Dammit I wish I remembered Germany for FRQ 2. I just had to BS and ignored the 1950s time period and put stuff about the US and how they put the capitol near VA to appease the southern states.

For economic development, I talked about how WWII led to the Great Migration and how women got more opportunities in society. I also discussed how the increased productivity made everyone feel like they were in the war together.

For the transportation infrastructure part, I talked about how more roads and cities based on the car lead to segregation. I talked about East LA where the big spaces and high prices caused Latinos and Blacks to live in the ghettoes while the affluent lived in the city. With the infrastructure, the poor remained and stayed in the poor areas while the rich remained and stayed in the affluent areas. I also tied this in with the ethnicity portion.

For the 3rd FRQ, I said that Country B had slow population growth and slow economic development as a result. Is that right? I said the positives were that everyone would have jobs but negative would be that they might not be able to keep up with the other countries in the world due to their limited workforce. I said the inverse for Country A. Is that right?

By the way, scoring guidelines are posted in late June.

I used Germany…but its wrong. I talked to my social studies teacher and Berlin was always the capital, it was just East and West Berlin’s capitals that moved. I thought it was a great idea though.

What were your examples for question 1?

I talked about bulk-gaining industries (soda) versus bulk-reducing industries (jewelry and diamonds). I said the heavy weight of soda requires it to be near its market while jewelry is light and expensive, so it doesn’t have to be. It has to be near its raw materials to take advantage of agglomeration though.

Here’s what I put… no gurantee’s on accuracy, but I was pretty confident on most of them. I abbreviated my explanations to avoid spending an hour writing this out.

1A - Dairy… products stay on shelves longer…
1B - Paper… easier to transport final product than the raw materials…
1C - Most corn grown in midwest… easy to transport the corn… much stays local… demand increases… production increases.

2A1 - Japan… I used the technological boom as an example, but I wasn’t too confident.
2A2 - Nigeria… Lagos to Abuja to ease ethnic tensions… thank you, AP Comparative Gov =)
2B1 - Russia… cited examples of secessionist group violence (Chechen school siege… again, thank you, AP Comparative =) )
2B2 - China… east developed w/ infrastructure and economy (to a degree)… west is poor and mountainous with little or no infrastructure.

3A - Country A… stage two… I shouldn’t have to list characteristics… likewise of CB… stage four is what I said.
3B - A= lots of young workers… B=even dependency ratio (I think that’s what I said)
3C - I don’t remember what I said here.

Wait, did we have to talk about the different stages. I put one small thing about Rostow’s stages of development in the first part…

1A - Privately owned farms.
1B - Oil plants
1C - most farms in midwest, best place to harvest

2A1 - PRC (slow switch to economic communism)
2A2 - Didn’t know, so I just didn’t address it
2B1 - Nigeria (Catholics VS Muslims, Shariah law)
2B2 - Mexico (women’s rights, pink taxis)

3A - Country A is a developing country, high amount of young people, high birth rate, high death rate; Country B low birth rate, low death rate
3B - Young consumers for Country A; stagnant amount of jobs for Country B
3C - Lots of young workers will be very very detrimental in the coming years in Country A; Country B has lots of old people competing with young people for jobs

****!!! I did NOT use any examples at all for economic development and transportation infrastucture!!! Will this severely hurt my essay score???

Umm yeah unfortunately. It said, “Use contemporary examples…” in the question…

Usually the FRQs give 2 points for each part; identifying an example and then explaining it.

Okay, so I probably only lost 2 points, because I only didn’t use examples on 2. Big deal.

I tried to self study this (as a lot of other people do) but the test turned out to be harder than I anticipated…still hoping for at least a 4
