AP Human Geography 2010 Prep

For anyone who’s planning to take the AP HG test in 2010!

Questions, or anything about AP HG!

Those who are self-studying are welcome!

First question: How do you plan to study for AP HG?

Alright. So, I got the Barron’s prep book, and I also ordered a textbook (I forget the exact title - I’ll tell you when it arrives =P). The textbook I got for <$10, including S&H, and so I plan on using that to add on to the prep book. Other than that… doing the practice tests, and staying informed of the world around me.

I’m going to read the Barron’s book too and I have a textbook called Advanced Geography. Though not meant for the AP HG Exam, it has several good resources or at least I think so!

Please AP HG was so last decade. :D

I used Barron’s last year. its plenty, I actually only read it on the drive to the testing center… Had Cultural Geography (rubenstein) but ditched it after the first chapter. Too much info… got a 5 anyways.

The first thought I had was “Whoa this person knew about AP HG in 1999”. Then I realized …

Thanks for the tips! (:

I’m going to get the Barron’s book… maybe the flash cards… woohoo self-study!!!

NO, don’t get the flashcards, blstrs! :stuck_out_tongue: I wasted $20 on those and didn’t use them once. Just reading the prep book is more than enough.

How long did you take to read the prep book?

Well… haha, fifteen minutes  aka, the car ride to the exam :)

On a more serious note, the book is not long. It will probably only take you two weeks if you read every night.

Wow, that’s fast and pretty incredible. Maybe you already had the knowledge required for the exam.

Thanks for replying!

What helped me was being in debate. A lot of what’s on the exam regards what you would read in a newspaper like the New York Times. For example, the oil market was covered on the test (not in depth, but questions like what country produces the most petroleum).

Maybe reading an online newspaper like BBC News or, as I mentioned, the New York Times would prove beneficial to you (if you don’t already).

Good luck, I’m always happy to help with what I can!

^ LOL im in debate too and last years topic helped with both HG and ES

but the barrons book could easily be skimmed in about 5 hours if i remember correctly.

Probably, but unfortunately I only opened it on the car ride there- thank god for debate :)

EDIT: I guess I already mentioned that  Part of my plan to prevent me from procrastination this year is to humiliate myself in regards to my bad habits, hopefully I won’t ever want to do so again. And so far it’s working ;)

Which of course explains why I haven’t started my math hw yet…

Yeah, I read those everyday. So it’s general knowledge?

Haha, have fun.

Thanks cyberchrondriac and WannaBYalie!

No problem, 082349, you’ve helped me just as much :)

And yes, the majority of the test is general knowledge- especially if you read a good newspaper regularly (which you do).

Now, to my math homework… maybe…

Finally got the Barron’s book today! =)

i’m planning to start studying APHG in depth after midterms week. got my barrons book, a cultural geography textbook ordered… just wondering, how are the essays? i’m confident that the multiple choice questions won’t be bad after reading the book, but i’m worried about the FRQ.
i’m not sure my school will let me self-study it yet, though. they’re kind of strict about it and they’re not deciding until after next week.

Haven’t looked at the essays but from all the stuff I’ve heard about HG, it should be fine too.

Hmm, do you have a heavy workload or something like that? If not, you could always try justifying to the school why you want to take the AP exams.

no, not at all. my school is just strict about letting their students self-study APs in general, because if we screw up it really hits our ranking. i’m definitely going to ask to demonstrate/justify self-studying the APHG if they don’t let me, though. last year, i think there was a sophomore that self-studied 5 of them. fingers crossed!

Are you only self-studying for one exam? If that is so, it should be fine.
