AP Lang Summer Reading!

I have to read 5 books…at least you don’t have to write an essay

what are frqs??

Free response questions.

Seven is definitely overkill. Like, you are going to end up writing on ONE book. Like, seriously? How is one supposed to recall the necessary knowledge of motifs, allusions, symbols, in-depth analysis from SEVEN books, plus whatever is read in class. To me, it sounds ignorant. If one was to just read them for fun, sure, that’s fine and dandy, but no one is going to remember everything from 7+x novels. That angers me… even though it probably should not. :P

My daughter’s AP English class is only requiring one summer reading book. There is a list of three to choose from and none are classics.

The Awakening
Their Eyes Were Watching God
The Things They Carried

Class assigned: The Great Gatsby, Streetcar Named Desire, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.

Self-assigned: 1984, War and Peace, The Hunchback of Notre Dame

i read 1984 and i actually really liked it. im still a little confused about the ending though :/

Avoid Ulysses, it’s a really deep piece that even the most well-educated readers find time-consuming. Not sure why your teacher would include it as one of seven in summer reading.
I would recommend Heart of Darkness (deep and meaningful, but short), 1984 (good book, but really easy reading), Crime and Punishment (a useful one for AP essays). Haven’t read enough about the rest to give you the other 4, but between HoD and Crime and Punishment, you’ll have enough material going in to write an essay on almost any topic.

Seven books? Damn…

Eats, Shoots and Leaves (this author comes off as pretentious)

On Writing (Steven King)

1984 (I already read Animal Farm so hopefully all of Orwell’s books are as good)

I feel so bad for you clandarkfire, haha.

I have to read three books. Their Eyes Were Watching God, Into Thin Air, and Life of Pi.

Oh, and Vapperss, I’d read Things Fall Apart if you’re looking for an easy read. I read that in my 10 Honors class. It was pretty good, and a REALLY easy read.
