For AP English I need to read 3 books. Which 3 books should I read from these 5 books: Things fall apart. Pride and prejudice. The grapes of wrath. Candide. The color purple.*

Can someone who has read all 3 tell me their rankings/favorites?

What’s with the asterisk?

I have not read any of those books(though I need to read Candide for my AP Lit Summer HW.)

I would personally pick Grapes of Wrath, Pride and Prejudice, and The Color Purple. All are extraordinary novels that I love.
GoW: 8
P&P: 10
CP: 9

While I’ve only read Candide, I do know that Candide is incredibly short. I have also heard from my AP Lang friends that Grapes of Wrath can be incredibly boring if you’re not into Steinbeck.

Oh wow thanks fer ur input :)

I’d recommend Grapes of Wrath and Pride and Prejudice (if you’re planning on taking Lit later these will be helpful).

For my AP Lang summer reading last year, I opted for one of the shortest ones, Heart of Darkness. Stopped about 1/3-way through because it was SO boring. SparkNoted it, as well as the other one I chose to “read” (Three Cups of Tea).
Although that one actually seemed like a good contemporary read. Gaaahh I’m so lazy!!!

Lmaoo the length doesn’t matter to me because I have alll summer :). And what would be the 3rd book u pick because I need 3

Hmmm, I don’t really know too much about the others…someone said Candide is short, so maybe that one?
I think I remember seeing that was a choice to write about on the AP Lit exam often, as is The Color Purple. It’s your call, really, though.

Are you going to be a junior? Are you ultimately taking Lit?

No I’m a junior going to senior. I cant take AP lit

You could probably take the senior test as well. My English Lang. class, for instance, practices for both the Lang. and Lit. test. It’s relatively easy with a little practice.

I would read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Seriously. It’s pretty easy to see where the original story deviates into blood and guts, and it’s a lot of fun for summertime reading.

zombies? thats not even on my reading list lol

@concusto do u think ill be able to take both of the tests at the end of the year?

You should be able to of you feel you can do well. If y’all do not practice for the senior test in class, you should put some research into the Lit. test and make sure you know how the FRQ’s are, multiple choice, how to write the essays, etc.

I think that poster was referring to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a parody written quite recently.

Geez, you’re lucky. For my summer reading (for the same class), I have to read seven of the following:

The Waste Land - Eliot
Heart of Darkness – Conrad
Crime and Punishment – Dostoyevsky
The Sound and the Fury – Faulkner
Ulysses – Joyce
The Return of the Native – Hardy
A Tale of Two Cities – Dickens
Siddhartha – Hesse
Finnegan’s Wake – Joyce
Darkness at Noon – Koestler
Moby Dick – Meleville
1984 – Orwell
War and Peace – Tolstoy

It’s going to be a long summer…
Any suggestions?

SEVEN?

…where do you go to school?

Just an average public school in Oregon with a new teacher (next year will be her first year) that feels the need to torture her students…
Most of those books are incredibly hard to follow - I’ve read the first few chapters of Finnegan’s Wake about 3 times and still barely understand them.

Ummm, who is she to require you to read so much…? It’s Lang, not even Lit. And I’d say that’d call for a complaint to the school board.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, it is AP lit; apparently I misread the thread title…
But I still think it’s overkill. :(
