AP National Scholar

Is that a very good award, which colleges (like Stanford) like?

I’m thinking of taking:

AP Euro
AP Phy C
AP Calc AB
AP Calc BC
AP Psychology
AP Statistics

Should I self-study some aps?

what grade are you gonna be in? If senior, it’ll be pointless.

I’m going to be a sophomore.

well, then - good luck! i tried to do it my junior year, but got two 3s so no national for me.
as to impressive - sure 8 tests in one year would look pretty good, but not astonishing enough to make it a factor in admissions, especially to a school like Stanford. other thing would be if you had like 20 fives and 5 fours by the time you’re entering your senior year, but even then i doubt that it will help you all that much at a such selective school.
PS all that is my opinion by the way.

Don’t take both AB and BC. BC Calculus covers all the material in AB; taking both tests is redundant.

But yes, getting that award in your sophomore year is definitely very impressive. You may want to look at the statistics in <a href=“Supporting Students from Day One to Exam Day – AP Central | College Board”>Supporting Students from Day One to Exam Day – AP Central | College Board;

Don’t underestimate the difficulty of actually pulling off 4s or higher on all of those tests though. While AP exams aren’t incredibly difficult, that is a lot of material to learn. Since it sounds like this may be your first real experience with AP exams, I’d advise you to play it a little safer and trim off a few of those APs. Taking Physics C after you take Calculus, for example, will make your life a lot easier.

oh yeah, thats true. in addition, they dont even let you to take both ab and bc, just like they dont let people to take physics b and c in one year.

Actually, we follow a block-schedule system, which gives us 8 classes, 4 each semester. Everyone ends up taking AB&BC in one year.

I wasn’t thinking of self-studying those aps. They are offered at our school. I just want to do those(which I will end up donig in my soph & jr.) year, and do 2 or 3 more aps(like ap comp sci or macroecon).

Even if your school lists the two semesters separately as AB Calc and BC Calc, you cannot take both APs tests at the end of year. You would just take the BC test, which includes an AB subscore. Just something to keep in mind. I’m pretty sure it only counts as one AP for the purposes of the award.

in response to what someone said above, you actually can take physics B&C in one year but one has to be on the late day.

yeah, sorry, that was computer science :)

so no language, no english, no art, your schedule is very lopsided, and without english, etc those SATs, well…Stanford i think would like someone who has taken a language class and maybe a literature class, but I could be wrong

he probably was thinking of taking honors english classes instead of ap english lang or lit if english is not his thing

he WAS only posting the AP classes he wanted to take, not ALL classes in his high school career

i think

yeah. I was thinking of Honors Eng, then AP Lit, Lang, Chem, Gov, Econ, senior year. But, I want to get the award by college apps.

Whoops…I forgot to mention AP Art history as part of the list above. Hm… do you reccomend I self-study one ap, so that I have a shot at national ap scholar?

Ps… In response to other posters, I do have some ECs as well.

Yeah, self studying is not at all hard if you pick the right exam. Psychology is really easy to self study and get a 5 on. There are numerous posts around CC that’ll tell you which ones are the easiest.
