Hi, I’m a junior signing up for AP tests and not sure about whether I should take the AP Physics 1 test. I’m also enrolled in Honors Physics at my school, which covers about 75% of the Physics 1 material, so if I take Physics 1, I’ll have to self study a bit. I don’t have a lot of free time to self study until May, so I’m considering studying for SAT Physics over the summer and taking that in October.
I’m looking to apply to top engineering schools (UCB, Harvey Mudd), so would it be more important for me to take AP Physics 1 or SAT Physics? Should I just go ahead and take Physics 1 and risk not getting a good score? I’ve already gotten an 800 on Math 2 but no science SAT 2’s, so do I even have to take either test?
(also taking Calc BC and Physics C next year so since I’m going into engineering, should I bother with these physics tests)
In our experience, most of the engineering and science programs required 2 SAT subject tests. I know that Harvey Mudd does require 2 SAT subject tests. Check each website to determine what is needed. I think most of the science/engineering schools wanted Math 2 and another science — Mudd wants Math 2 and any other test.
So you are going to have to take another subject test. As for taking the AP test, I’m not sure how much the test scores count in an application process (that’s never been clear to me since official scores are never required). I’ve always thought the AP coursework mattered more to show you are taking a rigorous course load. The exams were more for college credit. (Side note: some schools like Mudd, won’t give you credit)
It’s better than my class. My AP Physics 1 only covers ~20% of the content at the Regulars Physics level. (we only do three-six problems per chapter, and they are simplest) We spent the first semester entirely on Kinematics and Newtonian Forces which is only two or three chapters in my textbook, and we never even came across any AP questions.
@ObitoSigma So how are you gonna be prepared for the exam?
This is a no-brainer. If you are taking Physics C next year, there is no reason for you to take the AP Physics 1 exam. The vast majority of colleges will not give credit for both. Add into the mix that the curve on the AP Physics 1 exam is brutal. 63% of the test takers failed the AP exam last year. Since you’re not even taking the class, I would not bother with the AP exam.
The Subject Test, on the other hand, is a different story. Going into engineering, if the college requests/requires Subject Tests, they will generally want Math 2 and a science. You’re better served focusing your energy on the Subject Test. Good luck.
I’d take it in May or June while it’s still fresh in your mind. If you’re not happy with the score, take it again, but I wouldn’t plan now to spend the summer studying physics.
