AP proficiency for ENG majors

My son has accepted admission to UIUC as an EE major and we live in the Chicago suburbs. After not previously exploring the extent of AP proficiency that could be given at UIUC (and older sister’s college limiting AP proficiency to 15 hours), we recently reviewed the web site below since AP tests for 2014 need to be paid for this week and no need to pay for a test that does not provide any benefit entering UIUC.

This post is looking for feedback/advice from previous UIUC ENG students entering with AP proficiency concerning starting freshman year in higher level classes and possible gotchas not evident from UIUC published info. I also realize that summer registration will review all the options, but any info usable right now is appreciated.

These are the AP tests results from HS soph/junior year :

Hours - UIUC Course -> AP credit course

4 - Math 221 -> Calc BC (5)
3 - Math 231 -> Calc BC (5)
3 - Hist 171 -> AP US Hist (4)
3 - Hist 142 -> AP Euro (5)

4 - Rhet 105 -> AP Eng Lang & Comp (5)

17 hours (after junior AP test results)

Son’s HS has about 15 students currently enrolled in UIUC Math 241 remotely (with the aid of a HS teacher), so below is possible UIUC proficiency after senior year AP tests and UIUC course credit.

3 - Math 241 -> Enrolled in UIUC remotely as HS senior (scoring in the 90’s)
4 - PHYS 211 -> AP PHYS Mech (5 needed)
4 - PHYS 212 -> AP PHYS E&M (5 needed)
3 - ECON 103 -> AP Macro Econ (4+ needed)
3 - PS 100 -> AP US Govt (4+ needed)
4 - SPAN 141 -> AP Spanish (4+ needed)

3 - SPAN 200 -> AP Spanish (4+ needed)

24 additional hours possible

Questions:
Does UIUC really allow the possibility of all these hours of proficiency?
Chem 104/105 does not appear to be a required EE course. If EE majors are interested in semiconductor design and then take Chem 104/105, what part of the curriculum does it fulfill?

Given positive results on the senior year AP results, any thoughts on freshman year class schedule? Also, son is also strongly considering the coop program after freshman year.

Fall 2014

4 - CHEM 102/103
3 - Math 286
2 - PHYS 213
4 - ECE 110
0 - ENG 100
??

Spring 2015

4 - CHEM 104/105 ??
2 - PHYS 214
3 - ECON 102
3 - ECE 313
??

This is from a reddit user who met with his engineering counselor at UIUC. They are instituting a new schedule in the coming years that will affect your son. As far as I know chem 104/105 is not required for EE. I’m also an incoming freshman for EE looking for to find out how well ap’s prepare for the upper classes.

Thanks for the link.

From the discussion in the “New ECE Curriculum” thread on the UIUC reddit, it appears the proposed changes for ECE frosh/soph classes are the replacement of ECE 190/290 with new classes ECE 120/220. Another comment indicates that ECE 120 is essentially a modified ECE 290 for freshmen. It teaches the hardware of the LC-3 and Logic. ECE 220 is essential a modified ECE 190, it will teach C and enough C++ so that a student is prepared for CS 225. ECE 198JL/198KL are currently trial mode classes for the changes.

I also found this wiki had some good info :
