AP Question 4

Soz for too many Psychology questions.

Elizabeth picks up the clothes from her bedroom floor and puts them away to avoid her mothers repeated nagging. Elizabeth’s behavior is being influenced by

(C) negative reinforcement

Hmm, I thought punishment because nagging/scolding would be considered that. My prep book gives an example of negative reinforcement: “buying a child candy so that she will stop crying”. I really don’t see how that’s similar to Elizabeth’s case.

Thanks.

well it’s reinforcement, because it’s something that will help her remember in the future to repeat that action (picking up the clothes). any behavior that increases the probability of repeating a good action is reinforcement, whereas any behavior that decreases the probability of repeating some action is punishment.
