So having been on this website for 2-3 months, I’ve noticed that not a great big deal is placed on AP scores. It seems that not doing well on the AP exam has no effect in getting to a top 20-25 school. So why even put a ton of effort? I got a B+ in AP English but I worked my butt off to get a 5 on the exam. I’m confused

Well, the main point is to get college credit while in college. Thus, if you double major or have a very demanding major, you already have credits, so you can graduate on time, or early.

Plus, taking the test and challenging yourself helps prepare you for college finals and whatnot. It truly is a valuable experience.

While it seems to be true that AP scores are not extremely important in terms of Admissions, why don’t you take the SAT subject tests in the same subject while it’s fresh in your mind?

It’s hard for adcoms to assess you based on your AP scores because they are so generic (a basic number, 1-5). On SAT subject tests, however, adcoms can see the difference between a 700 and an 800, which makes it more fair to judge an applicant on.

Good job on your test! Isn’t the satisfaction of being able to know and tell people that you got a 5 worth something as well?

Haha I guess it is satisfying. Thanks!

The credits are so valuable in college. They can get you out of weed out courses, get you out of liberal arts requirements, help you have a quicker or just easier path to graduation, and save you money.

People care about AP courses because colleges care about AP courses. If you put effort into the course and got a good grade, you’ll probably do well on the exam, so might as well take it.

The OP got a so-so grade in the course and a stellar score on the exam. Same thing happened to my son with AP Chem. Will that great score do anything at all to balance out the B+ when ad coms look at his/her application? Clearly a kid with a 5 mastered the material, so does it make it look like s/he was a slacker in class, or does it just make the class look hard?
