AP Spanish or placement exam self study

My senior took honors Spanish 4 last year and did well. He is not taking Spanish this year but just found out the college he will attend next year requires 3 semesters of Spanish. The only way to get out of this requirement is to score a 4 or higher on the AP exam or take a placement test administered by the school. He’d like to get out of as much Spanish as possible.

Has anyone found an online course that helped them prepare for AP Spanish Lang? Or alternatively is there a good online program or class that would help him keep his Spanish skills fresh for the college’s placement exam (which will likely be given next summer)?

The College Board revised all of the World Language courses & exams this year. There is now a new mandatory Course Project released in January & a portion of the AP exam in May covers the project. It may not be possible to take the AP Spanish Language exam without the in-class Course Project.

Could the student:

  • Talk in Spanish to other students who have completed high level Spanish courses or are heritage speakers?
  • Read news or other media in Spanish?

He might consider taking AP Spanish lang thru an online provider like BYU. Will his current HS allow him to sit for the AP test if he doesn’t take the class at the HS?
