AP Stats or college level math?

<p>D is a junior and currently taking ap calc. She’s looking at courses for next year. They have ap stats in her school, but she’d rather take a higher level math (linear algebra or something like that) rather than AP stats. Would she be missing something important if she skipped AP stats?</p>

<p>Well, my sister doubled up on AP Calc and Stat junior year so I don’t see why you couldn’t do the same senior year unless there was a scheduling conflict. Otherwise, I wouldn’t think it would be a big problem, Stats is known for being a fairly easy AP and at my school is actually considered a social science.</p>

<p>Raiderade - daughter is already taking AP Calc during junior year. Next year she can only do AP stats at high school. We could take her to a local college to do a higher level math or she could do AP stats at her high school.<br>
Trenchcoat, you think it’s important to get the AP stats in?</p>

<p>I would say it depends on her college interests. For example, most engineering programs do not accept AP statistics as anything but a general elective. Most fine arts programs would consider the CC advanced math as a general elective (if they give any credit for it at all). Personally, I think the admissions people would be more impressed with a good grade in a CC - indicating that the student is capable of college level work with actual college peers.</p>

<p>Linear Algebra or Multivariable calculus would be much better than AP Stats. AP stats is equivalent to one semester of college stats, but it doesn’t involve calculus, so it isn’t that useful (assuming your D wants to major in science or math).</p>

<p>Many schools would allow your D to take Linear Algebra if she’s had AB, and multivariable calculus if she’s had BC.</p>

<p>Thanks for all the input. D is indeed looking at science/math schools; clearly MIT or Caltech or Harvey Mudd. She’d much rather be taking higher math than AP stats, but I wasn’t sure it was a good idea.</p>

<p>Statistics is very useful. Nowadays, all people use are statistics in the lab. Its good to have a solid foundation on such things.</p>

<p>multivariable calculus is incredibly useful, tell her to take that. maybe she can double up with linear algebra because usually these are one-semester courses and both are quite useful. it’s great to learn this stuff in high school so when she takes them again in college she’ll learn them solidly.</p>

<p>I’m in AP Stat now, and I’m hoping to take Multivariable in the spring. Anyway, I wouldn’t say AP statistics gives you a very strong foundation in the subject, but it can be interesting.</p>

<p>AP Stats is an excellent senior-year class. I’m taking it right now and I love it. Although this does depend on the teacher to some degree, AP stats requires little to no work outside of class. Your D definitely won’t have to endure any stress trying to understand the material. Overall, in my experience, the class has been fun, interesting, stress-free, incredibly easy, and will almost for sure get me college credit. As long as one has decent analytical/math skills a 4 or 5 on the AP exam is almost guaranteed.</p>

<p>So AP stats is fun, easy, and AP. What’s not to like about it? Because it’s so easy it’s a great class for seniors (senioritis won’t matter, it’s that easy). I say leave the post-Calc math classes for college.</p>

<p>My understanding from this thread is that the OP’s daughter wants to take a higher level math class, and not stats. The OP, and understandably concerned parent, wants to know whether his or her daughter will be missing out on anything and if it is a good idea. I think there isn’t much of an argument against taking the college course.</p>

<p>Benefits of advanced math: More appealing to colleges, and if the college is a 4 year school, she could possibly transfer the credit to MIT. The Daughter wants to take the course. The course will give her a better background, help her develop mathematical maturity, and help her decide what kinds of math she likes.</p>

<p>Cons: It might be difficult? Establishes a permanent record that will follow her for the rest of her life. May not transfer.</p>

<p>Benefits of stats: Helps in labs and in research, easy and typically yields credit. </p>

<p>Cons: Almost always represents general education courses only, and typically does not reduce the number of statistics courses a math or science major must take. May not appeal to colleges as much. Daughter doesn’t seem particularly interested in this class.</p>
