AP Stats vs AP Economics

Just want to get a sense of how difficult this course is. My son is finishing my sophomore year. He is completing Algebra 2 and has an A- in it. Would AP Stats be doable — scoring an A in the class and a 4-5 on the exam?

He did AP Microeconomics online this year and said the test was easy. He is signed up for AP Economics which covers both Micro and Macro next year. I am thinking that he should do AP Macro online and do AP Stats in school.

I agree.. My son, took AP stats got As, but I think in -person is better as the concepts need to be clarified.

not a fan of Econ in HS. Few teachers have the background to handle the topic appropriately. And it’s just not very rigorous. What is teh value of the online course? What are his other planned courses?

Is your Son taking a math next year, such as precalc/trig? If not, that would have priority over Stats. That said, many of our top HS students do a math double: precalc/trig AND AP Stats.

Yeah it would be a math double. Precalc and AP stats. Is this doable.

He would do Macro online with the tutor who taught him Micro.

Like I said, it’s a popular option for strong kids at our school, so definitely doable. That said, it requires critical thinking skills to setup the problems. How’d he do in Geom?

Geometry was A- too.

Also how much work is it? Is it more work than Geom or Algebra 2

My daughter thought AP stats was the easiest of all the AP classes she took in HS. Not a lot of work and very straight forward. Found the AP test to be one of the easiest as well.

it’s a lot of numbers and arithmetic: mean, median, mode. Plus a bunch of graphical stuff. My son took it after BC CAL, so felt it was easier.

Every kid is different. My kid struggled for the first couple of months until he got it, then he was on easy street. (But this was also a brand new teacher, who was also learning how to teach and come up with a curriculum.)

But, before doubling in math, what is the rest of the schedule? Does have have an English, Science, History, & Foreign Lang?

Is he taking the AP exams as well? Then I think it would be a good idea to take macro online and stats in person

Yeah that’s what I am leaning towards. But I will make the final decision once I see the AP Micro score.

My daughter took AP stats and pre-calculus as a sophomore, not only did she think stats was easy, she loved it. She just graduated with a finance degree, math and accounting minor, and will be working as an actuary in July. Very glad she took that class.

Did it get less so? I took AP Econ (both) in HS and was given credit and placement out of intro micro and macro at an Ivy. (even then not all APs did that..) I took intermediate macro 2 years later and was fine :person_shrugging:

I went to a prep school, and my teacher had a BA in Econ from a top college, though that obviously didn’t play into the Ivy’s policy;)

That said, I think AP stats is probably better taught at HS in general!

Bingo! Few public HS teachers have such a credential.

Sure, but my bigger point was that if my college lets kid place out with a 5 (it still does for one of them), then it must be pretty equivalent to a 1st year intro course. Is that not rigorous? or did you just mean it is almost always poorly done (vs. the curriculum is lame;) I thought you meant the curriculum wasn’t up to par.
