Deforestation and swamp draining are examples of
(A) ancient humanity’s innate sensitivity to environmental issues
(B) the practices of herding societies
(C) projects that allowed societies to shape their environments
(D) large-scale efforts that ancient societies were not capable of
(E) none of the above

The answer says:

(A) b/c Even ancient societies were able to exercise a great deal of control over their environments.

Does the solution’s explanation describe choice A or C (What I think should be the answer) better, and why?

I say A. From what I remember about World History (took it 2 years ago!) ancient civilizations used these techniques not to shape their environment, but as a way to use their environment to grow crops and such. In addition, ancient civilizations were at the mercy of their environments and were in no position to “shape” them as they desired.
