Apartment Help in Seattle/Kirkland

My oldest is beginning a summer internship next week in Kirkland, Washington. He had a roommate and apartment set up, but suddenly the roommate changed his mind, didn’t sign the apartment contract and has backed out of the whole deal.

Does anyone know where he can find an apartment for the summer near 720 4th Street in Kirkland. He won’t have a car so needs to be within walking distance or close to public transportation. Cheap is good and he doesn’t need anything fancy or large - just a place to sleep, stay clean and with a small kitchen. This came up suddenly and he hasn’t had much time to look, but has checked Craigslist and called a few complexes, but they all want a 12 month lease.

He’s getting desperate. We would greatly appreciate any help.

well that sucks-
he might look for a house sitting job for a backup- maybe someone who needs care for their pets?
I would look on craigslist for that- also seattle livejournal
He also might consider picking up a bike at a yard sale- the Eastside doesn’t have great bus service

He also might contact the real estate companies- particulary those that specialize in condos- they may have sellers who would like to lease their space for the summer.

also try free local weeklies
as well as craigslist

Thanks so much. No luck yet but he’s not giving up. I really appreciate your help.

try circulating through the UW campus looking on every cork-board where anyone can post - plus of course the online equivilent. Finals are next week and surely someone is moving out on their room-mates or has a few months left on their lease. Bus service to Kirkland would be fine, plus living near or on campus would be better than renting some grandma’s basement apartment in the burbs.
It’s a tough market - things are much higher than last year. Good luck! PS, if you want to scope things out, the metro website has good bus line info so you could see what buses run to his work.

Hi–I live near Kirkland and used to take art classes at this place:
www.kirklandartscenter.org
This is about three blocks away from your S’s internship site. You might call them and ask if they know of any sublets or any ideas (long shot, but they are nice in that office).
This area of Kirkland is a popular and expensive place to live, mostly nice houses and expensive condos. I think finding a rental is going to be hard.

It’s a tough market, especially the Eastside. For a summer only rental, the best option will probably be around UofW. Yes, mass transit is pretty dismal around here, but it does exist, so check out the possibilities at King Co Metro for bus routes and what not that might expand your search range. I don’t have any first hand knowledge, but I’m seeing more and more Flex cars on the roads on the Eastside, so maybe that is another source of transportation in a pinch.

I know very little about it other than to know it exists, but there is a small Christian school, Northwest University, in the Kirkland area. You might check their housing section to see if there is an off campus housing or summer sublet list available.

One of the sites I found useful when hunting for a summer apartment was:
http://www.housingmaps.com/</a>
This website lets you easily see where the apartments on craigslist are located. Very helpful for sorting out the lists when location is most important (of course not all craigslist postings include the address, but it is a good starting place). When using Craigslist, be sure to look at sublets/temporary, rooms/shared, and apts/housing - there will be listings for the summer in each category. Good luck to your son!

Since I know how to use Google, I notice that your son’s internship is with Google… Congratulations. I expect they have someone at the internship office who can help with housing. He can easily get there from Redmond or Bellevue, where he’s might be able to find a summer sublet. I’d recommend a cheap bicycle. It doesn’t rain much in this area in the summer (really) and there’s daylight from 5 AM until 9 PM most of the summer as well.

Thanks all - he’s using your suggestions and will hopefully find a place to live before next week.

dmd - yes, he’s interning at Google but is apparently on his own with housing.

There are numerous corporate short-term apts and extended stay hotels on the Eastside. They are pricier but easy in and out and furnished with everything you need.

Many many thanks everyone! He found a sublet near the university, fairly cheap, nicer than he expected and there’s a bed. He’ll have about a 45 mnute bus ride each way to work, but he’s okay with that. He’s considering a bike once he gets acclimated. We both really appreciate all the help.
