Are the rental rates for apartments in the Westwood area negotiable, or is this not something people do?

You should always try.

yes and no. Depends on who you are renting with. Most apartment complexes owned by those management companies are not negotiable with the rent price. Only deal I’ve gotten from them is they gave me the rest of the month free since I signed the lease in the middle of the month.

Places managed by independent owners (mom and pop) can negotiate in my experience.

That’s for Canada… not LA

[Los Angeles Apartments, Orange County Apartments, and San Diego Apartments](http://www.westsiderentals.com/)
There is a fee, but their signs are everywhere.

Although westside rentals is pretty good, your best work will be done just walking through the North Village (area next to campus) unless you do intend to live in Brentwood, Sant Monica, etc.
