I have gotten a lot of good information and help from the CC community last year for my son’s internship housing situation in Seattle. I am coming back to ask for help again. My son will be starting his first full time job in East Hartford, Ct the first week of July. We do not know much about that part of the country. Any information and/or recommendation about apartment rental, locations, how to deal with furnitures, etc. will be very much appreciated. We are hoping for something below $1000 a month (below $900 will be even better). He will be moving there from the West Coast. Thank you in advance.

Where is he working? Pratt & Whitney?

Everything east of the CT river is cheaper than west of the river. You might be able to find a 1 bedroom apartment for $1000 a month. East Hartford is not the most desirable place in the area but not bad.

Have him look in Glastonbury and Wethersfield. Glastonbury is nice…and truthfully would be my suggestion if MY kid were looking for a place to live in the area (we live in the greater Hartford area but WEST of the river).

To be honest, it won’t be hard for him to get to work in East Hartford even if he lives in West Hartford. It’s pretty tiny state, and the traffic isn’t nearly as bad as in CA!!

^^that’s true except when Pratt gets out (usually staggered) and the insurance companies.

There are lots of apartment complexes in Manchester, which is just east of E. Hartford.

Yes, he is going to work for P&W. Is there apartments in Glastonbury and Wethersfield that might go for less than $1000 / month? How about near downtown Hartford? What will you recommend to deal with the furniture situation. Renting seems to be quite expensive. Thank you again for these many good information.

I wouldn’t recommend most of the apartments in Hartford - its a pretty seedy city. There are a few good apartments in Hartford near Bushnell Park but I’m sure they are more than $1000 a month. Its too bad, he is moving when he is. Around September, I’ll be trying to rent out my father’s house in West Hartford. There are apartments near the Hartford line in Wethersfield on the Berlin Turnpike. I can’t remember if there are any on the Silas Deane highway in Wethersfield. You might be able to find cheaper apartments in Manchester which is one town east of East Hartford or Vernon which is farther out.

There is an Ikea store in New Haven. There is Craigslist. There are a bunch of Goodwill Stores. He should be able to outfit an apartment with these places. Ikea would be where I would start.

Agree…Manchester might be a good choice. I know there are some condos near Buckland Hills mall…don’t know if there are rentals or not. I would think he should be able to find a one bedroom apartment for $1000 a month…I think.

Thank you very much for these information. I will check out some of the areas you folks mentioned. I will look into IKEA as well.

P&W will also provide information on places to rent. I worked at Hamilton Standard years ago and my father retired from P&W after working there for 35 years.

I’d vote for Manchester also, for Year 1 at least. Safe. Centrally located. Easy access to P&W. Many stores. Reasonably priced apartments. East Hartford lacks most of these laudable characteristics.

I have a co-worker (young, single 30yr old) who lives in this area of Manchester and really likes it. All renovated old mill buildings, so interesting architecture, sometimes high ceilings/lofts. Lots of nearby shopping and services in Manchester.

Oh, and I can see Pratt from my office window. Good luck to your son. If you need any other info, I can ask co-workers who are contract employees at Pratt.

Hi archiemom, where are those Pratt contract employees co-workers live and where will they recommend a single 22 yr. old guy to look for a reasonably rent apartment. Thank you.

My co-workers at Pratt are older and none of them live within 30 minutes of East Hartford. I’ll stick with my recommendation of the Manchester mill area. Also try Craigslist for other East Hartford, Glastonbury, Manchester listings.

The Hartford Courant has listings in a magazine section on Thursdays I think.

I came across this Park Place Towers Apartment in Hartford [Park Place Towers Luxury Rental Apartments Hartford, CT 06106](http://www.parkplacect.com/) Do any of you know about this place and the surrounding area? There seems to be some apartment at the below $1000 range. Again thank you all for the good information.

Downtown Hartford would not be my first choice…but I checked the link and the place looks decent enough for young folks. Is there any chance your son can do a short term rental at a residence inn or something like that (PW might have an arrangement with them for new hires)…and then go to SEE the places in Manchester and Hartford? It would also give him the chance to perhaps talk to some others of the younger employees at Pratt for ideas.

Your son is better off in East Hartford. I don’t consider that area to be that great. There isn’t any advantage to living in Hartford for him - the streets are dead at night, you have to deal with the traffic getting across the river. He’s better off on the other side of the river. CT is very geared to suburban living. For the most part, the cities are poor and don’t have many amenities. Also if you want to do something in Hartford at night, its easy to get there and is very compact.
