Appeal letter for academic dismissal

Hi, I was recently dismissed from The Art Institute Of Pittsburgh and I was wondering if anyone has the time to read my letter of appeal ASAP and give me some feedback. This is a rough draft. I really appreciate it. Thanks.

To whom it may concern:

My name is _____ ______ and majoring in Fashion & Retail Management. I am writing to appeal my academic dismissal from The Art Institute Of Pittsburgh. I was not surprised, but very deeply upset to receive an e-mail this week informing me of my dismissal. Knowing the fact that I may not be able to further my education saddens me, but it’s my fault and no one else to blame for not taking the responsibility for my course work and having a low GPA.

I will admit, over the course of my first two years, I had a very difficult time, and it showed in my grades as a result. I am not trying to make any excuses for my work, grades and very poor academic performance, but I would like to share and explain the circumstances.

When I first applied for The Art Institute Of Pittsburgh, I was overwhelmed to find out that I was accepted. I have always wanted to go to The Art Institute, but my family couldn’t afford to pay. When I found out that I can take classes online, I felt like my dream in making my life better and working in fashion was about to happen. As I started taking my class, my grandmother became very ill in the months of March through June 2012. At the time, I was enrolled in Fundamentals of Design and Fundamentals of Business, during that same time I was taking care of her. Unfortunately, I failed both classes. I eventually took them over and during that time, she suffered a massive heart attack and stroke. She was later placed in a nursing home, where I would stay with her during the day. I would bring my laptop to do my school. She had enough energy one day to write on a note pad asking me how are my classes coming along. Knowing that she wanted me to do well in school, made me pull myself together and work hard to for her.

My grandmother passed away on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at _____ ______ Hospital. I went into a terrible depression, but I would look at the note she gave me, and I would get up to turn my school work in. At the end of both classes I passed, but still I felt like I could have done better.

I have not shown my best work at The Art Institute, but I am hoping that I will be able to do so if my appeal is approved. I am in a better place in and at peace with her passing. Even with my reading and spelling disability, I know if I was given a second change, I would be grateful and work my best at your school. I hope that you may understand I’m not a bad student and having a low GPA that led to my dismissal does not show that. I am planning on working my best to achieve a higher GPA. If I’m approved, which I’m hoping that you will consider, I plan on taking Sales and Event Promotion class which I’m looking forward to. I’m very focus again and back to the place in my life when I first applied to The Art Institute Of Pittsburgh, which was hopeful and edged to learn from my professors. I should have never let my personal family problems impacted my coursework. I take full responsible for what is happening and would like to say I’m deeply sorry for not staying focus on my goal, which was to be a great student.

I would like to thank you for taking the time out to read my letter, and I hope you will give me a second chance at The Art Institute Of Pittsburgh. It has been somewhat of a hard road, but I truly do know things will be much better this time.

Sincerely,

_____ ______.

your ideas are good and well expressed. there are errors throughout the essay but they are easily fixable. if you need help editing it feel free to private message me and I can assist you in that.

It’s too easy to say no by a letter. Can you meet face to face with an administrator?

no i can’t. i wish i could. do you think the letter is well written? I was sent this today: You will need to provide documentation of approved mitigating circumstances.

could i send them her funeral program and should it be hand written?

I’m not sure I understand a few things concerning the details of your coursework and your relationship with your grandmother.

You say that you took care of your grandmother when she was ill and later visited her in the nursing home during the day. Are your parents in the picture, or are the guardian of your grandmother?

You say that you passed the classes that you took when she died in Oct 2012, I assume those were for the Fall semester that ended in Dec. If you passed, why have you been dismissed? How many warnings were you given, were you on academic probation? Where was your advisor during all this, didn’t they tell you to take incompletes due to personal problems rather than risking failing classes?

i live with my mom but i would take care of my grandmother during the day. I moved to online classes and classes are by Quarters. So during the time where she was really sick and moved into the nursing home i was in the middle of the class.

i had no clue at all about this until yesterday. no one told me nor call to say I’m danger of being dismissed from school. I wanted to add that into the letter but i’m not

What were your grades for your most recent quarter, did you pass all of your classes?

If you were not put on probation or notified, I would definitely include this in your letter.

yes. i passed with a 74 and 75. which give me a 1.76 GPA. :(

So your gpa is not a C or above, but what I can’t understand is why you were dismissed after a passing quarter, and not earlier when your gpa was even lower.

And again, the policy of most schools is to put a student on academic probation so that they understand what they need to do to continue as a student.

or it was 72 and i know the last class was a 75. but my GPA is 1.76.

i know. i was asking why wasn’t i on academic probation

but reading it what do you think of the letter?

I’m sorry about your grandmother, but to be blunt, and I’m going to be blunt. I would not accept this as a reason. Peoples grandparents die. All the time. Yet they go to work. They move on.

You made choices. Maybe the right choices. But choices have consequences. Going to the nursing home, giving up on school was a choice you made. Period. You didn’t have to spend every day all day sitting at the home.

i’m glad you were blunt. but what if i was the only one taking care of her. should i add in my reading and spelling disability.

what would you talk about

I PMed you some edits.

thanks. and this is what the e-mail said

If you feel you experienced mitigating circumstances which led to your dismissal:

· You will need to provide documentation of approved mitigating circumstances.
o Examples of mitigating circumstances include:
§ Death in the immediate family
§ Hospitalization of the student
§ Documented medical problems
§ Other special circumstances such as: independently documented work-related transfers, natural disasters, and family emergencies.
o Mitigating circumstances are generally events that are outside of the student’s control and are unavoidable.
o You must submit supporting documentation with your appeal letter.

· Appeal Checklist:
· An appeal letter including a description of the mitigating circumstances that contributed to the dismissal
· Documentation supporting the mitigating circumstances
· Explanation of how the mitigating circumstances have been remedied or changed

It is also important to make sure that your documentation is dated to reflect the time frame and corresponding classes affected.

so with a Death in the immediate family, does anyone think i’ll be approved

i could i send my letter to someone to see what they think. i’ve already turned it in

Did they approve your appeal in the end ?

Hello my good friends,
I am new to this site and I am very happy to be a member.
I am going through an academic suspension, my GPA drop to 2.0 because I withdraw and dropped classes for the passed two to three semesters due to my mother and father being ill and both parents pass-away.
I need help to write a letter to appeal my academic suspension.
