Appeal

I’m planning to appeal a rejection that I received from UC Santa Cruz because I have met all their requirements, except GPA (.3 off). They allow “A single letter of recommendation (optional) from a source who can speak to your academic strengths.” I’m not close to many of my professors except my Japanese professor. However, I have been working at a company for almost a year for work studies and my manager knows me well (personality, habits, etc.).

My general question is:
Can I get a letter of recommendation from my manager (instead of a teacher) to support my appeal?

If yes, then is it better to ask my manager or my Japanese teacher I’ve only known for 2 quarters?

You get one chance, right? They explicity say “from a source who can speak to your academic strengths”. If your manager can speak about this better than your instructor, that’ll be your call.

But to be blunt, missing the minimum GPA requirement by 0.3 is not a small issue. That’s what probably did you in. U should be fully expecting to move beyond UCSC, IMHO. Good luck.

Since it is your academic ability that is in question, given that your GPA is below requirements, you need to have that addressed. The letter should come from a teacher.
