apple facetime question

Sorry for posting this hear, but I figured you all can talk non-computer language to a technology challenged mom and daughter  we have a macbook air (which I am keeping at home)…it currently is in daughters name and would like to keep it there if possible so she can access pictures etc on it…just bought a macbook pro for her to take to UF it too is in her name. She also has an ipad, but i don’t think she is taking that with her. we want to be able to facetime each other but currently if we dial each other it says the other is busy. I have no clue as to where e mail addresses go so she can call me or if I need an apple id’s which i just set up or whatever else needs to be set on each computer…help. Honestly I really only know how to log in and read e-mail and to type a document on word!!!
