Apple iPhone 5 battery problems?

My daughter just took her iPhone 5 in to an Apple store and they gave her another one. Her battery wasn’t holding a charge
and apparently, her serial number qualified her for another phone. She is happy to have solved the problem without spending $$. I thought others might be experiencing the same problem.

D replaced her battery last year, not for free either. Mine is somewhat sketchy now, but I keep it on the charger as much as I can.

Good to know. I have a 5 and the battery runs down much faster than it used to.

My daughter’s iPhone 5 battery wouldn’t hold a charge, and it wasn’t within the range of serial numbers eligible for a free replacement – so I watched a YouTube video and replaced it myself.

Glad to know I’m not the only one clinging to old technology. The 5 was my first smart phone and I really really don’t want to “upgrade” to something enormous. My battery is going faster now that I think about it.

The lithium ion batteries used in many electronic devices including iphones at 100% charge capacity have a finite lifespan of 3 years once they roll off the factory lines…even if it’s sitting on a warehouse shelf.

This lifespan could be shortened by factors such as overheating, overcharging, keeping the battery at above 80% charge* without use for extended periods(more than a few weeks), routinely running the battery to absolute zero charge…especially in cold weather, keeping the battery at absolute zero for extended periods** etc.

  • If one doesn't plan on using the device for an extended period, it's best to keep the battery charged somewhere between 40-60% and store in a cool dark dry area to ensure longer battery life.

** If a lithium-ion battery is at absolute zero for an extended period, the safety circuit within the battery will automatically disable the battery at a certain point for safety reasons as a battery at absolute zero charge for too long make for a potentially unstable dangerous battery if the safety circuit is not engaged. Once this happens, the battery is completely dead and one’s only recourse is to get a new one.

This was a known problem with some of the iPhone 5. I have a 5s and really like the size…hoping it will last a while longer…with no battery problems.
