Apple product help for the rest of us?

If it helps you feel better, PMK, when I’d had my MacBook for a while and was having difficulty switching my Windows-mindset to a Mac-mindset (what do you mean, right-click doesn’t solve everything? This system is not as intuitive as they say!) I called the Apple Store. The guy said, “Our computers are great. All of our hardware is great. But our support sucks. It’s not easy to get answers.” So I felt better!

I believe that Apple has free training classes at their Apple Stores now. I see people in the classes when I drop by. Mac OS X has always felt natural to me but I’ve used x-windows systems since the 1980s.

I don’t believe that you can hook a DVD-player to the iPad via the USB dongle. If you have a DVD that you want to watch on the iPad, you’d have to rip it and convert it to mpeg-4 on a computer and then move it over via iTunes.

oops you are right. But there is lots of info out there on ripp9ing DVD’s for ipad use.

I just downloaded the free MacLife magazine app. Good hints on how to do things as well as app reviews.

good luck!

Thank goodness I have CC in my life!

The closest Apple store is three hours away but the next time we go up to the big city, I’m going to take that class.

I’m off to check out the links provided. Thank you again!

Alas, the nano video revolution complete with 2 inch screen passed us by completely. We have a 1st generation and a 2nd generation, both still used daily, neither of which supported video. So, we just had to make do watching moving on a high def big screen with Dolby Digital surround. I know we were missing out, big time!

I got a new 6th generation nano yesterday. The perfect exercise nano. 16 gig, holds the entire iPod nazi program plus almost all of my 5-star rated songs. Clips to a shirt sleeve. And, best of all, has real volume buttons. I can’t count the number of times I’ve reached in my pocket for the old nano and blasted my ears off inadvertantly turning up the volume with the clickwheel.

My ipad is not picking up many of the network’s DS’s mac is. Any thoughts?

The iPad appears to have a weaker WiFi antenna. I noticed it on day one.

The later generation Nanos supported headset controls. My Sennheiser headphones have pause/resume, volume up and volume down. I have been able to get the song to move forward or back before but only by accident. I suspect some combination of the buttons does this. My MotoROKR headset has six buttons: two for next/previous and two for volume up/down. The other two buttons were for place call/answer call.

With the fifth-generation Nano, you get voice recording, recording off the air and video recording which can be handy for off-the-cuff recording. You could also probably put those YouTube videos on the device too so that you could see as well as hear the workouts.

I have enough trouble trying to get situated to hear the workouts on the nano without trying to watch videos. What has worked (a shirt pocket) for the exercise bike or squats doesn’t work lying on the stability ball doing reverse flys or hamstring roll-ins. And so forth. So my workouts have me constantly moving the iPod from a pocket or a lanyard to the floor next to me. An armband would work, I suppose, but who wants to workout, drenched in sweat, with the equivalent of a blood pressure cuff on their arm? Squats with curl/press are hard enough without all that! This new little clip nano should be the cat’s meow for that.

The armbands stink.

Literally.

I bought one a long time ago and used it a few times. They get drenched with sweat.

I think that the old Nano was ideal for running. For something where you’re moving from exercise to exercise, it might not be the best. The reviews on the new Nano are mixed (which is a bit unusual). It’s a sin in high-tech to remove features.

There are headphones where the Shuffle sits right on the headphone bar so that you don’t need to clip it to anything or have a wire waving around.
