I am between flights & ready to throw my iPad in the trash. I got this thing in large part because I have a fear of flying & watching movies helps me cope.

I thought I was all set…wrong! Got to the airport & the thing will not connect to WiFi. Exausted my computer knowledge in five minutes, no luck. Tried the apple ipad help webpage. It looked like the English language but I had no idea what it said. Have I installed X, Y or Z? I don’t know, the things two weeks old, shouldn’t it be ready to go?

Then it tells me I cannot watch things I already downloaded in my Netflix account while in Airline mode. What?!

So, is there a CC equal for apple products? I’m looking to ask a simple question and get an answer that is clear to someone who has no idea about apple products other than she would like to use them.

Oy, another Xanax for me, I really dislike this.

Most airports don’t have free WiFi… could that be the problem?

As for Netflix - it’s a streaming video, not a download. So you can’t use it on the airplane, since you can’t have your devices transmitting stuff in flight - I would guess that’s the reason.

Okay we have an ipad and travel a lot so here is what I know. Yup…netflix is streaming video so no movies off netflix while flying. Sucks.
You can get on the wifi at the airport by paying for the service. Usually it is boingo or similar. Warning: boingo is expensive, especially if you are in Europe.

PMK–I’m one of those “non-apple-language” people, too. Neither my H, an incredibly adept computer guy with no love for MS (so it’s not personal) nor I could figure out how to get our iTouch off a particular mode. I finally googled it, and found a ton of people had asked the same question. The emphasis is on form, not function (why include those fussy 'controls" if they’d make it look less sleek?)

You can rent or purchase a movie on iTune. Open the videos app on your iPad and go from there. This will of course depend on your ability to access WiFi.

Ok so you didn’t do your homework. We can help. Netflix is streaming, so no computer or ipad can use it in flight unless you are on one of the few planes that has wifi on board. So whether it was an Apple or a Dell, your out of luck. And wifi in the airport is usually expensive, and not enough time to watch a movie. You will need to purchase and download a movie to watch it on the plane. You can purchase movies ahead of time on itunes. Or TV shows. Or Podcasts.

I have a new (well used Ebay Macbook), and after 4 weeks I LOVE IT and will never go back. I am 50+ not very hip and do not wear my pants tight. I use Iboughtamac.com for help when I need it. I was an iphone user first and love it, and maybe when I have two through college I will get an ipad. Hang in there. The next trip will be better.

YOU CAN DO THIS. Or PM me and sell me your used one.

I’d like to think my eyeglasses are at least a little hip but skinny jeans are no friend of mine.

Indeed, I did not do my homework. I made the mistake of thinking that because I can use my iPhone in airports with no problem then the ipad would be basically the same (they really are alike in so many ways except I don’t have squint to read the screen!)

I’m living and learning thanks to all of you!

Assuming the iPad is largely what it looks like - an enlarged version of the iPhone but without phone capabilities -

To help pass the time I downloaded a bunch of video onto my iPhone and watched it while flying. The screen’s not big but it’s actually perfectly adequate for the task. I was really surprised how long the battery lasts when in airplane mode (i.e. transmitter off) - it lasted the over 4 hours I watched it and it still had juice left.

The movies/shows I watched were old ones that are public domain. They’re available for free download in mpeg4 format (which works with the iPhone and lots of other platforms) from www . archive.org.

There are two types of iPads – one relies solely on WiFi, and the other can access the same 3G cellular network as your iPhone. However, with the 3G one, you have to pay a monthly data contract with AT&T, same as with the iPhone. I assume you bought either the WiFi only one, or didn’t pay for an AT&T contract.

An iPad is in my future, I just haven’t decided yet whether I want to spring the extra bucks for the 3G one.

ellemennope - good to know! And Alaska Air offers WiFi on many of its flights for a reasonable fee. DH uses it all the time, and he let DD to use his account when she flew back to college - she was absolutely thrilled to be able to Facebook her buddies from the sky :)

Kate - please give your iPad a second chance I’m thinking of getting an iPad for my lengthy bus rides, and I’m inclined to get just a WiFi version (which also will help to curb online shopping while on the bus, LOL). Mine will be preloaded with a very boring 1000-page book that I have to read for work - that’ll keep me busy for a while :(

You can buy videos from the iTunes store that get downloaded to your iPad or computer. If downloaded to your iPad, they will be backed up to your computer. If you download to your computer, then you can select it to be loaded onto the iPad.

BTW, I watch movies on my iPod Nano while waiting in line or for others to finish shopping. Talk about a small screen.
