Hey, that’s half a month of cellular service!
I wish I had gotten a screen protector. I have 2 long scratches on mine and have no idea how it happened. But now I notice them every time I look at my watch and it really upsets me!
Also agree that the Apple branded bands are a lot better than after-market ones, especially at the ends where they connect to the watch face. The cheap ones are really hard to remove when you want to change bands.
OK, it’s pretty industrial looking but I have this one and it’s 100% protected my watch and I am ROUGH on watches. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HC8495C/ref=twister_B07HC8T5LH?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I’ve had a couple, but have been using this one lately. It’s pretty hefty. There are lower profile ones.

I dithered for a while about a rubber bumper; couldn’t find one I liked. Then I saw an Otterbox on the Apple website – it’s the only one they sell. I went to an Apple Store to see it in person; liked it and bought it there. It’s also on Amazon: https://smile.amazon.com/OtterBox-Edge-Case-Apple-Watch/dp/B08637DV7Q/ref=sr_1_4?crid=20E4769BJP4S9&dchild=1&keywords=otterbox+apple+watch+case+40mm&qid=1588544289&sprefix=otterbox+apple+watch+%2Caps%2C168&sr=8-4
The strap that came with my watch is a rubber sport band. I recently bought a sport loop band on Amazon that works and looks great. Only $6.99 and comes in a ton of colors: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B083HGCCJ8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
My sister got the one with cell service so she can use it when she’s out paddle boarding alone. She loves it. I have the original series 1 watch and have stopped using it because I found it clunky and it was excessive to me to have it AND my cell phone most of the time.
My cousin purchased the series 5 with cell for her husband for the fall detection as he had previously had a stroke. Unfortunately they never were able to test it out prior to his death, and the couple of times he did fall, someone was home and he didn’t have the watch on.
If not carrying ones phone while exercising, I think this is a nice feature. I am sure my husband doesn’t even have his set up; if I done set up his electronics, it isn’t happening!
H and I were playing jumping up and down in the snow with the dog. His fall detection alert went off, mine did not. Apparently, it is on at default at age 65 but you can turn it on, which I then did. They ask the age for set up of the health app.
I bought my band from Apple. It’s the Milanese Loop.

Sometimes when I pound a garlic clove with the flat side of a chef’s knife, my fall detection alert goes off. I’m afraid one of these days it’s going to call 911 for me before I can disable it!
Hmmm, fall up & down in the snow with dog must have been a great game—especially for dog!
@Bromfield2 That’s a nice looking band. Interesting that it is magnetic; any worries of it slipping off, or picking up paper clips on your desk?
The magnetic part of the band is only the tip so that you can adjust the size of the band to fit your wrist. (It’s not like a traditional watch band with holes.) The band itself is stainless steel. That sounds industrial, but it is very light.
I just saw the emoji. Not sure if you wanted an answer to the question, but here it is.
@Bromfield2 I did want an answer, the emoji was a wink as I imagined sitting at my desk with a paperclip dangling from my wrist due to the magnetic band!
I also have the Milanese Loop watch band that Bromfield2 mentioned. It’s what sold me on getting an Apple Watch. As a no fuss person, the ease of putting on this band is what I needed. Plus it’s super comfortable.
I have the band in gold, and the watch in rose gold. The Genius at the Apple store told me I couldn’t combine those two golds, but I didn’t like any other watch color, and likewise for the band. The two golds blend beautifully, and most of the time I have to look at them critically to tell they are two different golds. I love my watch!
Are the current sale prices at Costco ($299 for the non-Cellular) the lowest price of the series 5 since this launched? Were there cheaper deals on Black Friday or over Christmas? Just trying to put the deal in perspective.
Also, anyone know why the series 3 is still available (new) but the series 4 is not?
@snowball Got it!!
@suzyQ7 I was scoping out watches right after Thanksgiving (2019) and there were no sales/deals on the Series 5. I’m pretty sure that’s because the 5 had just come out a couple of months earlier.
Apple discontinued the 4 when they introduced the 5. The 3 is a more basic model, so they still have it. Here’s an article that discusses this: https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-watch-series-4-discontinued-series-5-vs-series-3-2019-9
I would not get the 3. It’s fine if you already have it, but the leap between the 3 and the 4 was huge. The leap to the 5 was much less, which is why the 4 is gone. I have to 4 and haven’t been tempted to upgrade. Not that much different.
I may get it as a grad gift for my rising college freshman. She has a medical app that would be great on this, that’s why i’m considering it. The only thing is, she’s accident prone so I’m really worried about another broken piece of electronics @ $300 - that’s why I was considering the $199 series 3. How good are the screen protectors for these things?
