Apple Watch

I had a fitbit. No wait… I had 4 fitbits, because they kept falling off and got lost (poor closure design) or they fell apart. Each time they replaced it (first time took a lot of discussing-- they thought they needed to just send me instructions on how to close it… um NO). They actually stopped making the one that kept falling off, and just gave me my $ back… which foolishly went into getting a new fitbit. The first of the 3 more that kept falling apart. I will never buy another of those.

Yes, waterproof. Yo can swim with it. There’s a button to drain water afterwards.

I had my Apple Watch since last November. I love it. I have a cellular one. I don’t have to take the phone on my walk. It also works as a back up phone if my phone battery is dead. I also love its Apple Pay feature. It’s simpler than on the phone. You double click and you are done. No fumbling with your wallet for a card or type the password. I can’t compare to a FitBit or its exercise feature since I never used a Fitbit. I looked at the new Apple Watch 4. They are gorgeous. It’s thinner, more elegant and has a bigger display. I am thinking about upgrading to Apple Watch 4. I will get $225 back from my Apple Watch3. That makes the net cost bearable.

I’m getting a Series 4 for my birthday in a few days so I’ll let you know what I find out. I’m not getting the cellular connectivity because I don’t think I need that.

I used to use a Fitbit but had so many problems with the charger that I gave up on it.

Yes, @igloo, mentioned the teardrop shaped icon to drain the watch that at first I didn’t know what it did. Ok- dumb Q- now when I am exercising it asks me, after I’ve been running a few minutes, if I want to track it, and the little green running icon starts when I accept. But I have the darnedest time finding how to start it (and stop it) manually. Can someone advise? Thanks!

@jym626 You click on the exercise button, the green circle with a running man. Pop up shows to choose from walking or running. You click on running. After the count down, it starts. To end it, you swipe to right and choose end option.

@patsmom It probably is wise to opt for noncellular. In addition to the higher phone price, you have to pay additional $10 to your carrier for connectivity. I like it knowing that I have a back-up phone if I can’t use my phone for whatever reasons.

I plan to get an apple watch for my mom this Christmas. It has a heart monitor and will alert her if she goes into Atrial Fibrillation. Plus it has voice over and siri which will be helpful as she is sight impaired. She already has Amazon Echo/Alexa, which certainly has downsides, but this advanced technology has been wonderful for her!

Is the exercise button the same as the activity rings, @igloo? I can’t find another :frowning:

Ooooh wait, I think I found it on the apps screen. Never saw it before.

@thumper1 I think you mean the Alta model of Fitbit. I had that before. I’ve liked the Versa, but I think I’m ready for the next step.

Daughter has a series 3 She swims daily so likes being able to use it to track yardage . Also runs, has music synced so can listen with wireless ear buds. I don’t believe the activity app gives a reminder to move like Fitbit- just the stand reminder.
Fitbit ok for me but once this one goes I’ll probably get the Apple Watch.

I have an Alta Fitbit I like. Just don’t like that I cannot see it in bight daylight even in the shade.

For H, I compared the screen size and dimension stats of the Apple 3 and 4. The 977 mm big screen size is in the 44 mm. The 40 mm and 42 mm have similar screens at 759, 740 but the 40 mm is smaller and thinner. Confusion in that the dimensions are in inches and the other stats are in mm’s.

Not in local stores here to look at yet. Does anyone have an Apple 3 or 4 that they can compare if they can see it in bright daylight?

Right @MomofWildChild it’s the Alta. It’s basic…but fine.

My spouse loves the Apple Watch. Great for swimming, uses it for tracking cycling and walking. It does have get up and stand reminders. Can discreetly get texts without having to pull out the phone and can respond via voice. Has had it for 2 years and still works great. Several people at work have them and highly recommend them too. For athletic uses, the Nike band is by far the most comfortable. I’m hoping to get one too.

@leftrightleft The activity app absolutely reminds me to move. I usually exercise first thing in the morning; on the days I don’t, I get a message something like “your move ring is usually farther along”. Later in the day I may get a message like “you’re so close to closing your move ring - a brisk 15 minute walk should do it!”

I got one! Got the smaller one and did decide to get cellular. I think it might be a good safety feature for me since I often run alone and I don’t take my phone. So- I have it set up and I’m trying to figure out all the icons. It was a piece of cake to set up. I feel like I just got a divorce from FitBit.

I love the bigger screen of my FitBit Blaze and have gotten a lot of compliments on it especially since getting a couple of new bands (very inexpensive). So the size of the Apple watch will be a plus to me. Part of the purpose of the bigger screen is to accommodate all the info it can give you - so I’m all for the bigger size.

@MomofWildChild you were an easy sell!!

I think you are gonna love it, @MomofWildChild , and the fact that you don’t take your phone with you when you run makes the choice to get cellular smart. Safety first!

Family has many Apple watches - have had them since beginning and just bought two 4s for gifts to upgrade from older models. Kids and hubby like that they can see things they need/want to in meetings and class without pulling out the phone. They all use for fitness as well. I am the only one in fam that doesn’t have one so can’t speak specifically to features, but everyone else loves them.

I had pretty much made up my mind before I went. I was surprised that I decided on the cellular, but once you get over the initial bump in the cost of the watch, the monthly fee doesn’t bother me. The features seem sort of overwhelming, but I’m pretty good with stuff like that, so I’ll figure it out. I’m just a little sad to leave FitBit- I spent a lot of my time (too much) worrying about getting my steps in.
