Apple, you make me tired

Many iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s owners are complaining about a bug that essentially shuts down the phone even when it has a lot of battery life left. This is a problem that is happening right now, and yet, Apple hasn’t figured out the true cause or at minimum hasn’t disclosed it to the public. Apple has a replacement program, but it doesn’t appear to cover all of those people affected by this bug. Apple employees say it’s a real problem at its retail stores.

@cap I had a similar problem where iTunes would not launch. I re-installed iTunes and it solved the problem.

@PoohNDisney I tried that before ever calling them. It hangs up at the apple mobile device step. Two different techs walked me through uninstall and reinstall, including registry items. Same thing kept happening. It was escalated to the engineers, who then needed a second screen shot of log files and I haven’t heard back. I need to call them again.

If the offer of a new iPhone by Apple was for an unlocked phone for $300 that probably would be a better purchase than a locked $250 phone from Verizon, IMO.

We’ve been Verizon customers forever and not likely to ever change (H was an employee for years and is very loyal), so having a locked phone isn’t an issue, but for a grad student holding down two part time jobs, $50 is real money. S, a former Apple devotee who has become a skeptic in recent years, just opined that the tech people on duty at the Apple store often don’t know what they’re doing, and who knows who they hired for the Xmas rush. So maybe a phone call to Apple service is the better route.

I wish Apple would spend less time coming up with new (and glitchy) devices to toss out to the salivating hordes and more time fixing what’s already out there. They keep pushing their technology to the point where they can’t make it work. It’s rather like a Peter Principle for devices.

Yes, my iPhone 6s was very glitchy for awhile. I had to make a few trips to the Apple Store but fortunately they were able to fix it so it works ok again. I agree that they may have hired some folks for the anticipated holiday rush who aren’t as good at troubleshooting as their more seasoned staff. Disappointing to read about all these problems with Apple devices!

@ignatius, I think you may have gotten lucky. I’m pretty sure Apple hasn’t been making iPhone 6 units for quite a while, and I doubt they’ve kept enough old stock of new phones lying around years later to replace every iPhone 6 that is damaged or defective.

AppleCare specifies that the units will be replaced with units “equivalent to new in performance and reliability,” but some customers have not been happy with the replacements and a class action lawsuit was filed against Apple a few months ago for issuing refurbished replacements.

I may have been off in my numbers, though. I think the cost per claim used to be $79 plus the warranty for $99, but with the 6s, it went up to $99 and $129 respectively. It’s a personal decision, but that’s too much for me. I’d rather take my chances. If it can be repaired, I still can’t be without a phone while I’m waiting for it to be repaired. And if I consider all the money I’ve saved by never buying the warranty on several iPhones over the years, that adds up to quite a bit toward a new phone.

That said, I do think it makes sense for some people who are less careful with their phones - or who have accident prone kids who go through more phones than most Hollywood celebrities go through spouses.

I just bought an iPhone SE at the Apple Store. AppleCare was $99.

This phone battery seems to go down quickly…like within five or six hours, it’s down to 75% or less if not plugged in.

I thought the battery life would be longer between charges.

You can very cheaply buy a backup battery that will charge the phone a few times before it needs to be recharged. It’s an alternative to getting a new phone. My daughter uses this one: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-bar-Sized-Portable-High-Speed-Technology/dp/B00P7N0320/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482444936&sr=8-1&keywords=backup+phone+charger

@dmd77 is your battery back up reply to me?

My phone is less than two weeks old! I shouldn’t need to get a new phone…or battery. But I did expect it to stay charged for more than a day.

@thumper1 – not specifically to you. To anyone who’s worried about not having battery when they need it.

Now, thumper, I will say that if your battery is going down that fast, you should check and see what you’ve got updating all the time (there’s a spot in settings where you can see what’s using how much battery) and decide if you really need it.

@dmd77 where is that in settings?

I have the cell data functions turned off on all of my applications.

I’m just following up on my post on page 1. Took D to Apple store today and got free replacement of her battery that was acting up. She’s had the iPhone 6s for 14 months.

She has Applecare but the employee who helped her said it would have qualified for replacement even if she had not had Applecare.

I find that our Apple store seems much more receptive to replacement when Apple Care has been purchased on the product. May just be my experience, and until recently, we have never had an issue with their phones but have had desktop and laptop issues.

My son’s 6 has the same problem mentioned here where it shuts off in the cold, such as when he puts it in the cup holder of the car during winter months or even when walking to classes in upstate NY. I have not had the same issue with my 6.

Have never purchased Apple Care on the phones, but would not think of buying a computer w/o it. I have had two lemons out of my four iMac purchases, and failures occurred after twelve months, so Apple Care paid for itself. One could argue that a desktop should not fail within two years…

The screen on my iPhone 6 s has been very buggy. It jumps all over the place, and when i try to scroll, the “copy” highlighting feature highlights where ever I’ve touched instead of scrolling. And the keyboard often has a recoul effect. It stinks. Also Siri turns on randomly. These problems started while the phone was under warranty but they told me I had to try a hard reset without re-downloading all my phone content, which would result in my losing all my texting / messaging history, which I didn’t want to do. Has anyone else had these problems?

I just went in and turned cellular data off for a bunch of things. The reality is I’m not going to be using that for iTunes, the App Store, face time, etc anyway. I would on,y use those things when using wifi.

Maybe that will help my battery use!

If not…I’ll,head over to the mall…and ask them what to do. I mean really…my crappy 5s held a charge for two days!

I had a wrist watch like that once. It just stopped whenever it got cold.

Don’t call 5S crappy please. That’s what I still use happily.

Hahaha… Still use even crappier 5. With iOS 6 because it does not have enough memory to download the updated versions. It is almost 4 years old! Battery runs thin, but just enough for me to get from one outlet to the next one. If it ain’t broke…

My 5S is holding up well. The battery holds more than a day at the rate I use. Once there was an app that was open without me realizing. That drained my battery fast. Some apps drain battery fast.
